DIY Pom-Pom Hair Bows

I love doing back-to-school shopping with my kids.  I guess it stems from loving going with my mom as a kid and well, and other than for groceries (boooooring!)……I love to SHOP!!  When we hunt for school clothes, I like to take the kids separately and give them some one-on-one time to pick out things they like.  It’s always fun to kinda follow them around and see what they gravitate towards.  Sometimes I have to do a little persuading away from something and maybe towards another (haha!)….but it’s still fun to watch their personal style start to emerge!

I have to admit though, it’s more fun to shop with Ellie and Chloe.  There are just so many cute girl things out there and oh my gosh, the ACCESSORIES!  So many scarves, belts, bracelets, bows….wow!  But every year, when we start looking at hair accessories, I cannot even stomach letting the girls throw any into the cart.  They pick something up and then I just cringe at the price, because, come on……we can totally make that!!

Hair Bows are something that both Ellie (5th grade) and Chloe (1st grade) love to wear!  And when they found a simple little Pom-Pom Hair Bow at the store about a month ago and were begging to buy it, I knew we were going to have to recreate that….but in MANY colors!!!

These Pom-Pom Hair Bows are quite possibly the easiest little bows to make….and don’t even need one stitch of sewing.  And good grief, they’re just so HAPPY!! :)

And those itty bitty little pom-poms…….gaaah, aren’t they so CUTE?! They kinda remind me of cupcake sprinkles or maybe party confetti.  Either way, they are just so FUN!

I attached alligator clips with teeth on the back (those are our favorite because they are the tightest)…..but you could attach any type!

And even my 5th grader Ellie (who has definitely developed opinions about certain styles) thinks these are “cool” enough to wear! Ha!  (It’s so fun to watch this girl mature…..but WAAAH, I kinda hate that my baby girl is growing up!)

So yeah, I guess we could have just bought some overpriced bows at the store….but it’s so much more fun to make them in the colors we like and make SO MANY MORE!  And just think, I have plenty of pom-poms to make more when these get lost (because grrr, they always do)…..and what a fun gift to give their friends!

Ready to make some of your own?

Okay, let’s do it!

Pom-Pom Hair Bow Supplies

  • Pom Poms 0.2 inch (0.5 cm), any color (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Tulle, any color
  • Metal hair clip
  • Silver ribbon (or any color)
  • Hot Glue Gun

First, cut a piece of tulle 8.5 inches long and 5 inches wide.

Then, place 2 small piles in the middle of your tulle. (I used anywhere from 26-30 pom poms, but you can experiment and use more or less.)

Now, fold up the bottom edge of your tulle about 1/3 of the way up…

And then fold the top edge of the tulle about 1/3 of the way down.  Locate the very center (where my scissors are resting) and make sure you have adequate separation of your pom poms and that they are pretty equally spaced from either end.

Then fold over the left side of the tulle over until the end slightly passes the middle.

  • Save

Fold over the right side over to the middle as well……letting the ends from each side overlap each other about 1/2 inch.

Pick up your tulle and pinch the center where the ends are overlapping…..creating a bow shape.  Add a small dot of hot glue in the center of your bunching, to hold it in place.  (Let the glue cool for a moment before pinching it together again because it will seep through the tulle.)

  • Save

Wrap some ribbon around the center, gluing it in place on the back.

  • Save

Add a metal hair clip to the back with more hot glue.

And you’re done!

Now, make like 10 more because these things come together so quickly!!! :)

Enjoy!
