Hi it’s Crystal from Stitched By Crystal!

Fall is in full swing now so it is time to pull out those boots for the cooler weather! Of course, you will need some cute boot socks to finish off your fall look. Did you know that cute boot socks can be made in just minutes and you may already have everything you need to make them on hand!

Today I have a simple tutorial showing you how to make some easy DIY boot socks!

All you need for these socks are some knee highs, lace trim, and decorative buttons. Or up-cycle an old sweater into a pair of boot sock cuffs that work great with jeans!

My 4-year-old is modeling the two pairs of socks I made for her, but you can use this tutorial to make any size socks. Even make some for you too!

To make these socks, you will need…

  • One pair of knee high socks
  • Lace trim, I used 1 yard for my 4-year-old’s socks. You will need more for adults.
  • Decorative buttons
  • Basic sewing supplies

For this first style, start by hemming the end of your lace trim by folding it over twice and sewing along the folded edge. You may want to add some fray check to the end of your lace as well.

Position the lace on the side of your sock with the hemmed side down and the bottom of the lace about ¼” from the top of the sock.

Sew the lace to the top of the sock, stretching the sock as much as you can while you sew. I find it easiest to turn the sock inside out and sew with your sewing machine foot inside the sock for this step. Stop sewing when you get back to your starting point.

Trim the lace about 1.5” past where you stopped sewing.

Hem the trimmed end of the sock by folding it twice towards the outside and sewing along the folded edge.

Fold the lace down the side of the sock and stitch it in place. Again this is easiest with the sock inside out.

Add your decorative button.

Repeat all the steps with your other sock, making sure you are making a mirror image so you end up with a right and left sock.

For the second style, Start by cutting the sleeves off your old sweater close to the armpit.

Sew up the side of the sleeves to fit your leg (or your child’s) I used a sock as a guide since I didn’t have my daughter handy.

Fold up the cut edge of the sleeve and hem using a zigzag stitch. I hemmed the top of my sleeves as well because I didn’t want the ribbing to be so long.

Add your decorative buttons and your socks are done!
