. . . . .

It’s me again, Kimberly from Straight Stitch Designs, and I am excited to be back sharing with you an easy felt cat bag you can make for your kids for their big night of Trick-or-Treating.

Halloween is right around the corner and my kids are out-of-their-minds excited.  They spend the entire year leading up to Halloween asking “when is it time to go trick-or-treating?”  Are your kids the same?  I think once they get their first taste of Halloween they never forget it.

Since my kids normally pick the store bought costumes over anything momma-made, I thought a fun trick or treat bag would be great for this much anticipated night of fun.  And a little black cat is the perfect accessory for your little trick-or-treater.

The bag is the perfect size for hitting the houses in your neighbourhood and not too big for your little one to carry around.

Your kids will be the cutest Trick-or-Treater out there with their custom bag.

The supplies you need for this project are minimal:

  • 1/2 yard of black felt
  • 12×12 square of white felt, or scraps you may already have
  • Fabri-Tac or hot glue gun
  • Pattern piece (click to download and print)
  • Basic sewing supplies (here’s a great list of common sewing supplies, in case you need a few ideas)

***For additional help, check out this Sewing Terms 101 post.

The pattern piece that I created can be printed on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet and cut out.  I also included the outline of a pumpkin if you wanted to make two different ones.

Once you have your pattern cut out you will need to take your black felt and cut two cat faces out.  I find if you fold your felt in half you can speed up the process by cutting two at the same time.

Set aside your two cat faces while we cut the rest of the felt out.

For the bottom of the bag and the handle you will need to cut 2 rectangles of felt that are 15″ x 5″.  (If you decide to make the pumpkin bag you will use the same size for the pumpkin as well.)

Take one of the rectangles and fold it in half so the long edges meet.  Sew together with a 1/4″ seam allowance, forming a tube.

Turn your tube right side out with the seam in the middle.  You now have your handle

We now have all the pieces ready to be sewn together.  Take your bottom piece and pin it to the cat face piece starting just under the ear.

Continue pinning all the way around until you end just under the other ear.  Sew these two pieces together along the pinned edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Repeat with the other cat face piece.  You may need to sew this slowly as you will have extra fabric from the other side of the bag to keep out of the way.

One last thing to sew and we can get to the fun part, decorating your cat face.

Take your handle piece and center it along the top of the bag bottom piece.  The handle will be overlapped by 1/2″ on the inside of the bag.  Sew the handle to the bag with 1/4″ seam allowance.  Repeat with the other side of the handle.

Now that your bag is all put together you can decorate your cat face.  This is a chance for your kiddos to help personalize it however they would like.  (If using a glue gun I recommend you helping with that step.)  Have fun with it.

You now have a super cute trick or treat bag for your kiddos to carry around on Halloween.

I hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial on how to make your own tricky or treat bag for Halloween.  I would love to see what you come up with when decorating your bag.
