The Ruffle Apron PDF Pattern (for Elli and Chloe)….plus a GIVEAWAY!

I did a little sewing over the weekend for Elli and Chloe, using Cami’s Child Apron pattern that she shared last week.  I originally wanted to save these for Christmas gifts but then remembered Elli has been asking for months for a bigger apron to wear in the kitchen while helping me cook.  And since the holidays are fast approaching and I knew we’d be in the kitchen a lot during the next several weeks, I decided to go ahead and let the girls have them to use right now.

And let me tell you, this pattern is a really fast project.  I didn’t have to do any sizing or calculating because Cami took care of all of that in her instructions.  So instead of thinking 5 steps ahead while sewing (like I normally do), I just watched a movie on my laptop while putting these together.  Simple as that.

Also, Cami and I both thought it would be really fun to GIVE AWAY the full pattern to 3 of you today (more on that below)……because why not?!  Gift giving season is coming right up — so, this will surely help you out with some of the “little people” on your list! :)

The pattern includes so many apron styles for girls AND boys……but this ruffly one is what my girls requested, so ruffle aprons it was!

I had so many versions to choose from, so I’m glad the girls told me what they wanted.  And of course, now Connor wants one so that he can help Steve out in the garage.  (Maybe I really will save his for Christmas though.  And buy him a real kid-sized hammer, work gloves, and a measuring tape.  He’d LOVE that.)

This pattern can be purchased in the Make It and Love It Pattern Shop

When I finished Chloe’s girly and colorful version and showed her, she squealed one of her big happy squeals!  Which reminded me that she is so much like her big sister……it cracks me up!

Chloe’s apron is made from your standard woven cotton fabric but Elli’s is made from sturdier home decorator fabric.  Both aprons are double sided which make them plenty thick and durable but Elli’s fabric is even thicker, like duck cloth, and perfect for a helper in the real kitchen.

After making it, I was a little jealous that it wasn’t in my size.  I mean, come on, how cool is that fabric??  And those polka dots! :)

All aprons from this pattern have a velcro closure around the neck and waist, that is adjustable for growing kiddos.  The front pocket on this version is pleated and holds all of their favorite tools.  Also, the ruffle hem adds the perfect frill to this apron…..which I kinda love on my little girls!

The neck strap is adjustable and is easy for little hands to do themselves.

And the waistband is the same way.  Plenty of room…..and easy to attach around the back!

Chloe (who’s 3) even takes this little apron on and off, all by herself.  And let’s be real, this is the perfect design for moms too, because we don’t have to tie the apron strings over and over and OVER again!

When Elli put on her new apron, she told me she feels more like a grown up.  This is just a new thing….but she has had a huge interest in helping in the kitchen lately.  Her absolute favorite thing to help me cook, is crepes.  I asked her why and she told me it’s because she gets to taste-test with me.  Haha!  She totally knows the perks of being the cook in the kitchen!

I also asked Elli what she thought the pocket on the front was for and she told me she thought it was perfect for putting a washcloth in there, because cooking is messy.  Haha, yep!  (Have you cooked with kids lately?!?!  Oh. My. Word.  Messy doesn’t even cover it.)  And then I told her she could also put recipe cards, measuring spoons, a rubber spatula, or whatever she wanted.  Because the cook is in charge of her own kitchen. :)

It’s weird to see Elli getting so old, but it’s also kinda fun to see all the things my almost 8-year-old can do.  And at least now, she can keep her clothes a little cleaner while helping out.

And while Chloe isn’t quite old enough to help stir things over the hot stove, she still thinks it’s pretty fun to help pour ingredients into mixing bowls and cut up potato peels with a plastic knife while I chop my own veggies right next to her.  However, she has a little play kitchen up in her room that she now MUST have her apron on to play with.  Why is everything mini, so darn cute?!?!

And in case you’re worried that your sewing skills aren’t quite good enough for this, erase that from your brain RIGHT NOW. :)  This pattern walks you through EVERYTHING.  So it’s the perfect project for beginners!  There are tons of pictures, diagrams, and the instructions are really clear and well thought out.  Cami really covered EVERYTHING.

Now that these 2 aprons are done, I have pulled out several other color combos from my fabric stash to make a few more kid aprons for Christmas gifts.  And I’m going to pair it with little kitchen tools (Ikea has cheap play kitchen supplies….like the “stainless steel” pots above).  But I also think it would be really fun to make an apron and gift it with some brand new art supplies.  Or play tools.  Such a fun gift…..rather than the typical barbie or set of race cars.
