Burlap Christmas Stockings

I know, I just made stockings last year.
(And the Christmas tree skirt is found here, in case you need one of those too.)
But, I happened upon these burlap stockings, and decided I was going to adopt the burlap stocking idea.
Mostly because I wanted more muted colors for the mantel this year.
And of course, this whole satin and burlap look just does something to me.
That textured combo makes me happy.
.
The new stockings have been happily hung above the fireplace.
.
And a bit of vinyl was added to the mirror behind the nativity…….a perfect reminder of a perfect birth, so many years ago.
(More info on vinyl projects here.)

.

Two styles of burlap stockings, both made with satin at the top.
.
And a few buttons for added detail.

Just the change I was hoping for.  Check.

The stockings were made just like the stockings found here, but I skipped the lining……and then zig-zagged the top.  (Which will be covered by the satin later.)  Then I used some twine and sewed a loop to the sides for a hook.
For 2 of the stockings, I created a ruffle by making basting stitches about 1 1/2 inches from each end of a long strip of satin, gathered it in, and then sewed it right to the stocking.  (Need help with gathering?  Click here.)  I also didn’t hem the edges of the satin.  I just used a lighter and melted the edges so they wouldn’t fray…..before gathering it all in.
For the other 2 stockings, I pleated a long strip of satin, ironed it flat, wrapped it around the top, sewed it closed along the back…….then hand-stitched it to the stocking around the top and bottom to keep it in place.  Then I added large buttons to the front.  (I used a similar pleating technique here.)

 And that was it.
I think we are officially ready for Christmas to arrive.
Well, as far as fun new decor goes.
We still have a few gifts to purchase.  Eeek.

I have been stalking your blog for quite some time but this post was absolutely wonderful. It brought me to tears actually. My husband's grandmother made burlap stockings for each of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and spouses of all. She used her award winning needle point talent to personalize each with our names and something Christmasy like a Santa or a teddy bear. No two are the same. It's something that our family
cherishes dearly. I think it's wonderful that you make your home so homey and make such wonderful
    memories for your family!

Oh…LOVE the texture! The smooth with the rough…

What fun to feel as you pull stuffers out! Question, without the lining…does it look holey with stuff in them or are you using them only for decoration?

This would look lovely as a tree skirt too I think. Why don't you test it out and let us know! ;) hehe!
