I have a really incredible, useful-for-so-many-projects, little machine to show you today.
And it’s sleek and compact.
And sings to me as it works.
It’s called a Silhouette.

I was shipped a Silhouette machine to test out………and then see if I actually liked it. (And the company let me know that I was not obligated to share this here with you all, if I didn’t like it. I could send it back with no questions asked. So, I figured I’d give it a try…)
I’ve got to tell you, once I opened up the box and saw all that it could do……I could hardly contain myself. My husband was studying for a final at the time and I kept making him turn around and look at the newest feature that I just discovered. He laughed at me……a lot. Ha! But there was so much to this little machine that I never knew something so small could do.
The Silhouette hooks up to your computer and cuts out the shapes/letters that you tell it to. So all you need is your machine, your computer, and the cords to hook the two together. That’s it.
(But you can also use an SD card with your image info and use your Silhouette wherever you go…)
It comes with many adorable shape and cutout files for no charge at all. And then you can use all of the letter fonts from your own computer, to design your own cut outs. You can even create your own shapes and logos, just how you like them.
But if you want more, they have a little online image store, where you can buy all sorts of different shapes, letters, phrases, cutouts, etc……and then upload them instantly to your computer.
It seemed like there were thousands.
Here’s a sampling…
Each download is priced at $0.99 but the more you buy, the cheaper they become. They have a subscription going on right now where your downloads are as cheap as $0.14 a download. Love the savings! And I love all of the little promos they have (and the free weekly download). And they have designers that come out with new images each week.
(Oh, and you can also upload images from your other favorite companies out there.)
So the surprise came when I saw what you could do with all of these darling shapes and such.
You can cut vinyl to match your home perfectly…..
Or make cut outs for your scrapbooking needs……
And even make paper cut-outs for all sorts of reasons….
And wow, make the cutest little cards without the hassle of cutting so many different little things with scissors.
And then like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, make glass etchings with the negative space of your vinyl.

And then one more thing that I fell in love with.
The heat transfer.
You can cut this stuff out, peel the negative space away, lay it on your fabric, then iron it right onto your clothing.
So I did just that.

Several times.
For my little boy and girl…..
.
I used the white heat transfer and wrapped the chandelier cutout around the side of the shirt just a bit. Then I placed an ‘e’ on the bum pocket of these pants and a name down the side of the pant leg. Love how they both turned out.

Then I used several car cut-outs and ironed it onto some brown knit. Then I put heat ‘n bond behind that, ironed it to the shirt, then stitched several times around the border of the brown. For the pink one below, I used some ballerina cutouts on some black heat transfer and ironed them right to the shirt. Then I cut little strips of fabric, gathered them, and sewed them right to the ballerina……like mini tutu’s.

For this little tree shirt, I applied it the same as the car shirt above.

Then finally, I found these cute little animal cracker shapes………..and I cut out a bite mark on one with some scissors. Then I put the words that my little guy uses, while munching on his favorite crackers.

It's worth a shot so I'll leave a comment.
I use it to first finish dolling up our little home- you know, all those little accents that make a huge difference!
Then I'd give it a try on some old clothes– to give them a good ol' recycle.
Gosh- the question isn't, what I would use it for- the questions is what WOULDN'T I use this for!? Right now, I can think of all the ways I would make greeting cards for friends and family. I'm sure I would do the heat transfers as well.
This product looks incredible. I would use it to make t-shirts – I LOVE the ones you've made, I would make cards with it, vinyl wording – so many things! This is the perfect item for a crafty person! I love your site – you've helped me overcome my fear of sewing with knit!
Wow! What a machine!! I LOVE that it hooks up to the computer! I had a cricut that someone had given me, but it was kind of a pain to use. This sounds DELIGHTFUL! Oh wow!!! That is so cool! I love that you can use your own images, but also have the option to download them as well. I just love the shirts that you made. This seems so much better than the cricut!

I have seen similiar products but nothing as great and wonderful and easy to use. I would love to use it to make stuff for my boys, I am always trying to figure out what to make for boys, this little machine would come handy adding ties, trains and animals to their clothing.

Wow!!! What's not to love about this machine! Oh my goodness, I've been wanting the Cricut for awhile, and have been holding off, because I feel like there would be something better out there – and TADAH! There is. Love the etching, and the vinyls. I can't think of what I wouldn't use it for!

That's really neat and I like what you've done with it. If I won the Silhouette, I'd use it for all kinds of things for my sister's wedding in September. I'm envisioning fun shower invitations, classy wedding invitations, personalized gifts for the newlyweds, and embellishments for the eight dresses I'm making to outfit the bridesmaids, flower girls, and mothers. My sister doesn't want traditional lace and beading, this would be a great way to add some fun, modern touches.

I would definitely use this in so many areas of my life. The first that comes to mind is decorating a educational corner in my little boys room.

I would use it to make cutouts to screen print. I love the simplicity of using cutouts and the screen printer, but I hate the idea of cutting everything out individually so I usually use the photo emulsion method. Wedding invitations, here I come!

I would definitely use it for heat transfers, because I'm more of a fabric gal than paper gal. Their vinyl examples were really great too- awesome for gifts. I would probably use vinyl to label containers in my craft area.

I NEED this machine! I have really really really been wanting to do some glass etching, but dread cutting out my own shapes! But I would also use it for card making and any other purpose I could possibly imagine!

i love making cards so I would definitely use it for that…and there are about a million weddings for me to attend this year, so I think I'd like to give the etching a go and give those couples a really great, personalized gift.
I would use it mainly for scrapbooking, but I am sure I'd also play around with glass etching, vinyl, and making cute clothes! I love that you can purchase individual designs to expand your collection and so you get exactly what you want!
I currently own a Cricut (my second one – newer and bigger this time around). I have some cartridges but buying them is expensive and you can never have enough. The problem is, you pay for all of the images and not just the ones you will actually use. To be able to hook up to the computer and have everything that is available and only pay for what you want is very appealing. I would use this machine for scrapbooking, card making, banners, etc., etc. The possibilities are endless!
I don't scrapbook, but I do like to make cards. All the other fantastic things it can do look like such fun too. I would love to try out the glass etching and the heat transfer. Looks so great!

I recently heard about the Silhouette and I would love to have one! I would get caught up on my scrapbooking, make some cards and use it for applique on different sewing projects.
I never knew you could do so many things with this machine… I would try out the etching and make some of those darling shirts.

I've been lurking on your site for months and have never commented on anybody's site but this has pushed me over the edge. I'm only border line crafty. Loads of desire, much less ability! This might be just the crutch I've been waiting for. I can finally see a way to hand make all the teacher gifts (glass etching, note cards, pencil cups). I just recently tie dyed for the first time with my kids and they wanted to add their initials to the shirts which was beyond me. I've been googling screen printing since the tie dye to try to figure out how to add their initials without purchasing a kit and this looks like it would definitely do the job. I also love the wall decals. Lastly, I think this would be a perfect way to get all the pictures finally into scrap books! Pre-made cutouts are expensive and when you mess up they're gone. With this I could just make another one!
What would I use it for? Everything! I especially have some ideas for vynil lettering I'd love to do.

This machine is AWESOME! I would first use it to make vinyl wall decals to spice up my house that I am trying so desperately to sell. I would then use it to cut fun rhinestone patterns for my upcoming wedding. I would also use it to make t-shirts for my bridesmaids…and then use it to update my stationary. Incredible!
I love this!! I always wondered if something like this was out there! I would use it for card making, scrap booking, anything involving vinyl, the possibilities are endless. I love doing crafty things but it’s so expensive to collect all these stickers, and embellishments, then you have to organize it all!! This would eliminate that and save so much time and money! Then those vinyl cutters (that only cut vinyl and nothing else) are so expensive too!

Holy Smokes!!! I want this so bad! It is so awesome! It solves the problem that all the other vinyl machines have – you can hook it right up to your computer and print out whatever you'd like. So stinking cool!!!!!!!

I would use this FOR EVERYTHING!!! Several years ago my husband bought me a Cricut machine and I have yet to use it…the reason you ask??…because it's too complicated. Sure, I could probably figure it out but then I have to buy additional cartridges at $30-$90 a pop…Thanks but no thanks!! This is so simple and cost effective that I would use it in every application I could. I make tons of stuff for my friends and family and it would be a great addition to my craft table!!

Vinyl birds for my daughters room; semper fi car vinly (since I cant find one I like!); yestedays glass etching post would be put to use on my huricane vase, glass cake stand lid and monogram on our glass cups; embellishments for wrapping paper for all those baby showers, weddings and birthdays I have coming up AND john deere shirts for my sons 3rd bithday..and thats just on the first day!!

i scrapbook, i sew, i decorate my home – this machine would come in very handy for all of my crafty endeavors.
but the first thing i thought when i saw what it can do was using it to trace various cut outs onto fabric for appliqueing things on baby clothes and quilts.
Man would I love to have one of these! I have a hard time crafting because there are so many talented people around that I get intimidated. This would sure make it easier to try all the crafting projects I think would be fun but aren't confident enough to try.

When I think of what I could use this for there is an endless supply of ideas running through my head but the number one is…. WOW… This little machine looks incredible! I would use it for heat transfer, paper crafting, glass etching,… actually when i've got one, I think I would use it in any way I can.
I would use it to decorate my daughters room. Vinyl for the walls, butterflies for a home-made chandelier. After her room is done, I'd use it on some clothes.

So cool! I can't think of anything I WOULDN'T use it for. :) I especially love the heat transfer. I love the fact that you can just plug into your computer and use your own fonts that you already have. What a great tool!

I sew a lot and would love to have silhouette cut outs. I'm also a huge fan of vinyl right now!!! Oh man, the possibilities are endless. My friend just got one a few months ago and has been going crazy with grass etchings and dye cuts.
What would I NOT make with this amazing little guy? I can see so many little areas of my home decorated with little vinyl cut outs — plates and tiles and decorative boxes and baskets, my headboard, my little baby girl's nursery, vinyl wall lettering in every room, the glass etching you did earlier — HOLY COW! My fingers are ightly crossed!! I can think of a million projects to try out! The vinyl cutting is a-mazing and I would also love to use it for personalizing my kids clothes… I was thiking it would be a great way to make stencils for freezer paper/fabric paint adventures… no more exacto knife : )

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Its hard to pick just one, but i love the glass etching you could do, but also vinyl transfers for the walls and the fabric transfers for clothes; i could picture lots of changes at my house!

I'm so glad we didn't have to choose one thing we'd use it for. I want wall vinyls. I want t-shirt designs. I'd like some glass etchings and bowl art. Pillows. Stationary. Paper dolls. Chore lists. Drawer labels. I could go on and on. :)
But mostly I want to gift it to my mother, who would be over the moon. Then I can make excuses to bring the grandkids to visit so I can use it for all of the above. :)
