DIY Holiday Tree Shelf…with Nativity Blocks!

So, last week I mentioned I would be joining in on a Virtual “Do-It-Yourself” Party…….yes, that darling Holiday Tree Shelf!!  It’s a super quick project that only uses two 6-foot long boards, that only cost a few dollars each!  Oh, and do you remember how I mentioned you could either make it on your own (more info below), or learn how to make the same project in person, by attending a FREE Home Depot workshop (#DIYworkshop) in your area?!!  (Check out dates/times and register HERE!)

Well, I finished my version and have been excited to show you what a fun and quick project this was!  However, I decided to skip the hooks along the bottom of the shelf and turn the shelf into a nativity display!  And then used the scrap wood from this project to create very simple nativity blocks….that were KID FRIENDLY!!!

This little shelf really is so charming and would look so cute on any ol’ wall in my house this holiday season!  However, I really love that we have another version of the nativity on display!!  (Yes, we have several different types of nativities in our Christmas stash!)

This idea stems from a little shelf that I hung in my girls room that’s about the same size, but it’s in the shape of the house.  We turned it into a “hanging doll house” and they LOVE that thing!  They put tiny dolls and mini animal figurines in there….and even make little furniture, etc.  So I thought it would be really fun to have something similar for our kid-friendly nativity sets during Christmas time, that the kids could play with and rearrange all they wanted.  Plus, it’s just so pretty…..that it adds to the holiday decor! :)

Also, it keeps the nativity sets up and off the floor….and saves space from trying to find a shelf or table top to set an extra nativity display!  And let me tell you…..the kids have been having so much fun with this thing!  Oliver is especially happy when the bigger kids are off to school and he gets to play with it all by himself! :)

I guess I could have still added hooks along the bottom section and then this shelf could have had several functions…..but after I painted “O Holy Night” along the bottom, I fell in love!  So the letters stay!

And just think—all this thing is, is several rectangle cuts of a 1×4 piece of wood.  No mitered corners or fancy cutting……yay!!!

And it really looks so pretty with your holiday decor…..whether you use it to fill with your other decor, or use it as a nativity display like I did!

Now, hmmmmm…….I might have to invite some friends over for a craft night, because this really was so fun to make! :)

SUPPLIES for DIY Holiday Tree Shelf:

Click on the link above and read through the instructions that Home Depot provided for this project.  I didn’t adjust the tutorial at all…..but was so excited with how quickly it came together.  Just a few cuts of wood and that’s all I needed!

And then it was time to put the tree shape together, just like the instructions above….

And then I added the support down below.

Then I added one coat of stain (Minwax, Provincial 211) and let it dry completely.  I decided to skip the hooks along the bottom and turn this shelf into more of a Nativity Tree display.  We have several little nativity sets that I let the kids play with….but I figured I could make one more set that’s even MORE kid friendly from the scrap wood left over from this project.  I just cut the leftover wood into smaller rectangles, sanded it down a bit, and painted each block a different color of acrylic chalk paint.

Then I found some very simple nativity silhouettes online (HERE are the ones I used)….printed them out, traced them onto my blocks, and then painted them with white paint.

Then I hung my shelf, arranged the little nativity…..and that’s it!
