. . . . .

Hi, it’s Tiffany from Making the World Cuter!  I’m going to Disneyland next weekend and I am soooo excited! This is the first year we won’t be pushing a stroller, so I won’t have a place to put all of our stuff, and I don’t want to carry a big bag. That’s why I wanted to make a DIY Disney vacation purse, to carry the essentials!

My kids are obsessed with pin trading and I have to admit there are a few of the collections that I like to look for when we go (those nerd ones are too cute!). For the purse strap I knew I wanted it to be able to hold some pins so I don’t have to carry a lanyard as well.

Besides the pins, the only other things I really need at the park are my phone, my tickets, and a card or cash to buy all the treats! No need to carry a big purse or bag when you can make one of these cute little bags and hold all the essentials!

You can wear it three ways…

  1. A messenger style bag
  2. A stylish fanny pack (who thought those words could ever go together, ha!)
  3. A lanyard for Disney trading pins

So happy not to have to carry a big back-pack or push a stroller this time! And this little cute thing is going to get some use even outside of Disneyland, because sometimes all I need is my phone and some cash. Running errands with out all that extra stuff can be so much easier!

Let’s make a simple Disney purse, shall we?

  • 1 1/2 yd Strap
  • Straight Pins

I made a pattern for the purse, and I laugh that I even call it that. It’s just a rectangle, but it does show where to cut the fabric to make the pockets the right size, so the “pattern” is helpful when cutting.

  1. Print out the pattern.
  2. Cut out a front and a back of the whole length of the pattern.

3. Fold down the pattern at the top mark, and cut out one pocket (if you are doing stripes you might want to cut in opposite direction of the front and back).

4. Repeat step 3 after folding down the second mark.

After you have your fabric cut, it’s time to add some piping bias tape.

Step 5: On the front of each of your pockets place a piece of bias tape along the top of the fabric and pin it with the piping on the bottom. Sew the tape on close to the piping. Fold over so the piping is on top and press with an iron, if needed.

Step 6: On larger pocket, take your strap and center it at an inch and 1/2 under the piping. Pin in place. Sew the strap in place.

Step 7: On the smaller pocket cut a piece of the hook and loop (the rough side),  and place it right under the piping on the front. Sew in place.

Step 8: With the opposite piece of hook and loop and one of the long pieces, center and pin it at 3/4 inch. Sew in place.

Step 9: With the long piece that was just sewn, place face up and layer the pockets on top with the larger one first, and the smaller one on top.

Step 10: Start adding the piping along the edge. I like to start at the top of the pockets on pin sparingly till you get to the other side. Be sure to put the piping inside and the outer edge along the side. Fold the strap over the bias tape.

Step 11: Fold the straps over the top and pin in place. This is so that the strap will be on the outside when you sew it together.

Step 12: Place the other long piece over the top of the whole thing and pin all of it in place with the piping going all the way around.

Step 13: Sew all the way around leaving a hole big enough to turn out. I left the hole from the top of the bag to the top of the pockets which is where I started sewing. Turn the bag out by pulling the straps first. Tuck in the open edge and place the piping in place. Sew closed.

Now we just need to attach the buckle and “cuten” it up!

Step 14: Sew the strap to the buckle as directed.

I cut out a Mickey shape on my Silhouette from some glitter iron on vinyl. I used the same shape from this tutorial for Disney shirts and just shrunk it down, if you would like to do the same.

Now the reason for the buckle is so that you can wear it three different ways. That way you never have to take it off for rides if you don’t want to. Just switch it to where it needs to be so that it’s not in the way. :)

  1. A messenger style bag
  2. A stylish fanny pack (who thought those words could ever go together, ha!)
  3. A lanyard for Disney trading pins
