. . . . .

Always on the search to make my spaces cuter, I put together these fun and cute DIY towel hangers for my boys bathroom a few weeks ago, and just love how they turned out!

I used the numbers 1-4 because I have four kids…three of which are the boys that share this bathroom. They all know their number, so I thought this would be a good way to know who hung up their towel and who left theirs on the floor. ;)

It is also the guest bathroom when people come over or come to stay, so I want it to look crisp and clean and not too childish, so the numbers work really well in the space. I still want to remodel the room, but little changes can make a big difference!

Here are the supplies you will need for this project:

  • Thin plywood cut into a 6×8 piece for each hanger
  • 1×2 (for each hanger cut 2-5.5 inches and 2-6 inches)
  • Hooks
  • Paint
  • Number Stencils (cut from digital cutter, or use your own designs)
  • Wood Glue
  • Sand Paper
  • Nail Gun or nails and hammer
  • Sawtooth hangers
  • Drill and screws (5/8″ works perfectly)

Step 1: After cutting all the wood (so, really step 2) paint your frames and the backing in the colors of your choice. I chose white for the backs and gray for the frames.

Step 2: Cut out stencils. I chose numbers like I said, but you could also do initials, names, pictures, even put a clip and hang actual photographs if you want! Whatever will go with your bathroom decor.

Step 3: Place stencils on dry plywood…measure from top and bottom if you want them even. I obviously did not do this, and wish I would have to make them a little more professional. Hindsight and all that.

Step 4: Paint the numbers using a stencil brush and pull up the vinyl immediately.

Step 5: If you would like a distressed look like mine have, sand the edges of the frames and then on top of the numbers as well.

Step 6: Using wood glue place a 6 inch pieces across the top, leaving a bit of a space at the top. Then add the side pieces (the 5.5 inch pieces) before adding the bottom.

Step 7: Turn the towel hangers over and using a nail gun with short nails (I used 5/8″) nail all the corners where the frame meet the plywood. You can also use short nails and a hammer, but if you don’t have a nail gun and you like building little projects…you should get a nail gun! I LOVE mine!

Time to add the hardware! I chose the value pack of robe hooks at Home Depot and the small push in sawtooth hangers. I like these lots better than the nail in option just because they are easier to get straight.

Step 8. Measure center of the towel hanger and then measure an inch down. Place the sawtooth hanger and hammer it in.

Step 9: The screws that came with the hooks were way too long, so I used some 5/8″ ones. Using a drill I attached the hooks to the towel hangers.

Step 10: Hang!

I love these so much! I think they would be great in a hallway too as back pack hooks for a fun back to school project.

They would also be cute in a bedroom for bags, or jackets or scarves. So many options!

For me though, the fact that my boys actually hang up their towels and don’t just bunch them over the towel bar, or puddle them on the floor…makes me so very happy.

Now if I could just get them to stop peeing on the floor. Sigh.
