It’s time to vote on another round of… “WHAT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE?”

what do you want to make 1

Remember how in the past, I have polled you guys, to see what you’re most interested in making?  I realized I haven’t done that in such a loooooong time.  And well, it’s time.  I thought it would be fun to do before the baby arrives this summer.  And well, I actually get a kick out of trying something I didn’t think of or necessarily need around my house.  But even more, I really love hearing what you all are itching to make.

Here are a couple projects that won in the past:

Fabric Dolls….oh, how I loved making these!

10

Fabric Boxes…..that work in so many different spaces.

11

(I swear there’s at least one more project I made from a popular vote here….but I can’t think of what it is.  Hmmm.)

Soooooo……..if you’re anything like me, you see something in a store, or online, or hmmmm, maybe at the neighbor’s house — and you love it.  But maybe you don’t love the price tag.  Or the fabric used.  So, you call a friend/sister/grandma/uncle and you ask them to help you figure it out.

I wish I could have you over and we could kinda dissect it together……but doing so here on this blog will have to do.  Deal?

In the past, I have shared a few things from around the web, to kinda get your ideas rolling…..but please, don’t limit yourselves to the image I share here.  Leave a comment (with a link) to something you’ve been dying to make.  And then I’ll pull ideas from the comments from this post and create a poll that includes the most popular ideas that you guys can vote on.  Whatever item gets the most votes, wins.  And then I’ll try and pick it apart and share how to make it.  Well, that is, if I think that I can make it.  Ha!  But if I can’t, I’ll tweak it a bit until it makes sense in my brain…..and then I’ll share.

Sound fun?  Okay, do tell…..what are you just dying to make?!!!

Need some ideas?

Girl dresses are always fun to sew.  Are you itching to try a new style?

Or maybe you’ve been dying to make some new bedding…..and aren’t quite sure how to tackle it.

Oh wait……I know you want to make something for you.  Maxi anyone?

1 maxi dress

Or yeah, maybe you need some new sort of window treatment to make your living space pop.

1 curtains

Or hmmmmmm……..a new purse or tote?

Okay, or maybe you want to make something really fun and playful like a play space for your kids/grandkids…

If one of the above images wins for you……tell me in the comments.  If you’d rather make something different or have another idea you’d like to add, leave a comment.  Chances are, others will love it too.  (And if you see someone else’s idea in the comments and you’d really like to make that too, reply to that comment and chime in with a “me too!”.  Then I’ll see that many like the same item.)

Okay……let’s see what you have stewing around in that brain of yours.  Can’t wait…..I LOVE this! :)

Talk to you soon!

-Ashley

they are all great ideas. I would love to see something about making bedding. Some sort of duvet or something so that when you get tired of the one you have or paint your room and they clash you could whip one up. I am new to sewing so easy is best for me! I have wanted a sunflower printed duvet for about 15 years now and have never found one. They are my favorite flower and would make me happy everytime I try to sleep (due in July so there is not much sleep going on now) Thanks!

Ok, in the top “let’s vote” picture I thought the ruffled dress was a ruffled purse (because it doesn’t show the top, not because I’m an idiot who can’t tell the difference between a dress and a purse). I made ruffled skirts for 3 of my girls for Easter (like your ruffle skirt with pre-ruffled fabric, but I made the ruffles go vertical and they turned out SO cute) but now I have tons of ruffle fabric left over. So I thought a purse with vertical ruffles would make great birthday presents for my girls to give their friends for the next while until we run out of leftover fabric.

Or my daughter votes for the middle picture of the hiding place for her room (the blue & white striped one). Can’t wait to see what you pick. They are always fun!

I want to learn how to make the new roman shades that use magnets instead of cords. I just searched Insulated Roman Shades and found they no longer use all those cords, but now clean lines using magnets how cool is that. I need them to be insulated because it an keep out the hot sun of summer and the cold of winter cutting down on my heating and cooling bills. Plus using decorative fabrics from the home dec department they could look fantastic even with paneled draperies down the sides of the window.

    Maria says:

I love skirts, and so do my girls, and summer is the perfect time for skirts. I know there are zillions of skirt tutorials, but there are a few that I have seen that I would love to make but can’t find a tutorial and too afraid to try it without.

Like this one for example, PERFECT for summer, but can’t find tutorial http://indulgy.com/post/owz2K8mp72n/diy-skirt

Or this one, I have seen it on Pinterest on hundreds of different people’s pages, but no tut http://beautystylish.me/2014/04/29/cute-diy-ruffled-skirt-from-old-t-shirts/

There’s another kind that I thought I pinned but can’t find it, but it was a ruffled skirt with the ruffles going on the diagonal but the width of the ruffles was uneven, like they were narrower at the top and wider towards the bottom, u would so love to know how to make it, but can’t find the picture of it.

I know skirt tutorials are very common, but most of them are pretty similar, would be nice to find some tutorials for some cute uncommon skirts.

    Sandra says:

I love all the ideas listed, but I suppose I am in need of things more practical for myself. I have always had a thought (I have never found one in the stores or googled it), but need to have a easy wipe down table cloth for our everyday kitchen table; with elastic around the edge so it does not move. I recently purchased a table cloth from “Mr. Wally” and let me just say it is no more than a piece of junk! I haven’t thrown it away yet, as I don’t have a replacement; which I have a nice solid oak table that needs protected. I have kids that like to lean or lay towards the table when sitting down to eat and the table cloth always moves and gets disheveled. I haven’t taken time to try and figure out how to do this myself, as I am really not a good sewer, I get by! Can you help? One other need I have is to make a curtain for a window that is a special size. I found curtains that I like and wanted to cut them to size and hem them, but then the material is really too thin to block the sun during the evening (this window in facing the west). I saw curtains that are like balloon style; I wanted to sew mine all the way down to form the balloon pleats down the entire curtain; just not sure how to do this because the material is so thin and the length of the curtains *84 inches) would be quite bulky, but would help block a lot of the sun. Soooo sorry to you all if this was too lengthy, but Ashley asked and this is what I need! Thanks so much!!

Well it looks like it’s going to be a toss up between the maxi dress and the play tent. I don’t have children at home and I don’t wear dresses so I would love to learn how to make a purse. I would like to make one with three compartments inside. I don’t have any idea how to make a divider in a purse. I have made small bags but really want to know how to make a nice one with compartments inside. Thank you for your consideration.

    Shandra says:

I would LOVE a purse, but I’d really love one that’s a decent size AND has pockets in it. I got one from Grace Adele that I was hoping would be perfect, but it’s just slightly too small. You know, a divider so that you have a spot to keep an iPad handy for kids while you’re in the waiting room, that keeps it separate from the spare diaper that inevitably ends up in Mommy’s purse, because we’re Mom and that’s what our purses are for! But who wants to give up the prettiness for functionality?!?

But, I’d totally go for a maxi dress with sleeves. I especially love the drape necks, since I’m nursing and it allows for easy access, but you can totally use it even if you’re not in that situation! Heck, make it flowy enough and you could wear it through a pregnancy too!

  155. 155
    Janita says:

I’ve seen these vacuum covers in some magazines, they portray a cow or cat face with a skirt to hide upright vacuum cleaners. I would like a cover with a unique design that fit in a room without having to hide it in a closet! Especially when there is no room for it. It would have to be easy to clean as well!

For me it would be a toss up between the maxi dress or the handbags. If it’s turns out to be the maxi’s I know that I’d sure APPRECIATE it being something with “sleeves” (non-tank or spaghetti strap) and something that would include suitable for plus size.

I’ve been wanting to get my 16yo daughter a ruched bedspread JUST like the seafoam green one you pictured – looks like a huge project, but I’d be curious to see if it’s easier than it looks (and cheaper than store bought).

I also love the striped spaghetti strap maxi dress, that would be fun!!

  174. 174
    Lisa says:

Oh, I’d love the Maxi dress! I can’t tell for sure on that yellow one… but maybe it’s a knit? I just got a walking foot for my singer machine (what a difference it makes! Can’t wait until I can save up enough to get a walking foot for my bernina) and I’m starting to get comfortable with sewing knits. I’m expecting baby #3 in the fall so a long, hot summer is ahead and a maxi looks so comfy. I think that kimono style would be so perfect! Maybe it can be made for post-pregnancy too? I have LOVED your blog for the past 5 years. You always give me wonderful inspiration for creativity! Thanks for all your efforts for the rest of us! :-D

    Robyn says:

What about one of those adorable slips that function as dress/skirt extenders. I am tall… Dresses sometimes tend to be too short. Especially bc I have 4 little ones and I am bending and squatting with them a bunch. I love the ones that are creamy and white lace, ruffled up jersey knits and crochet trimmings in a couple rows of subdued ruffles.

Or a way to take a dress we already have and add length to them.

    Lindsay says:

Hey there! So I first want to say I *love* your site and recommend it to all sewing friends and those that want to sew. I have made many projects off your site. The first was two petti-skirts for my twin girls 4th birthday which was bee themed and I couldn’t find any bee outfits in March. They turned out so cute, I made ladybug ones the next year! Sewing was so much fun I started sewing again all-the-time and have since held a few sewing classes for friends! I have also made tons of gifts from your site, including 6 fabric dolls. Thank you!

I would love to have a tutorial for a purse/bag. I am so picky. I know what I want. I want a medium sized bag that isn’t too deep. It needs an outside pocket for keys and phone. And several different sized pockets inside for first aid, check book, pen, lipstick and a small pocket knife (always handy). It would also be nice if there was a dividing pocket in the middle of the bag to slip coupons into and separate wallet from grocery bags (required in our city) and other staples. I am not a fan of leather and want the bag to have some structure or strength so that it doesn’t collapse if not full. I know that is a lot to ask because I have a hell of a time finding a purse I like!

Whatever you come up with, I am sure it will be amazing!

    Warmly,
    ~Lindsay C.

Though I could make it and then our cat might not even like it!
