Okay, this is completely random.
But I just couldn’t resist.
I get asked pretty frequently what my Go-To sewing (and crafting) tools are. And as I was walking through Joann’s the other day (remember….there’s also Joann.com), I walked through an aisle of shiny new supplies and quickly realized why walking through a similar aisle would be really overwhelming to a beginner sewer/crafter. It’s hard to know what to buy and where to start. So, while I was picking up a few things for myself……I started throwing in a few things for one of you. And then threw in a few more (like it was Christmas or something), for another one of you. Before I knew it, I had enough little basic random tools for 3 of you. What fun is it to only have one winner, anyway?? Haha!
And besides, I love this blog. Some of you have become great online pals of mine. (And some of you I’ve even met……and have realized that I wished even more of you were available to yank out of this screen and chat with.) And because I sometimes wish I could sit right next to you and help you conquer some random technique that you’re afraid to try, this is the next best thing. Give you a few things to maybe help scare that fear away. I know…..so random. But I just wanted to! :)
So, what are some (this is not a complete list) of my Basic Go-To types of tools/notions that I picked up for a few of you?? Well, a little of this and a little of that…..nothing too scary. But you can do a lot with these basics. Everything from my favorite scissors to my favorite glue gun……..and a few things in between.
**Keep in mind, this is not a complete list, by any means. There isn’t thread, straight pins, a pin cushion, etc. This was just a random sampling of some of the things I like!

If you don’t have a Joann’s nearby (or some sort of craft store), you can also shop at Joann.com. I’ve ordered several things online when the store is out, or I just don’t have time to run to the store. Love it.

- 1/2 yard of fabric: Lisette by Liesl and Co

- My ol’ trusty Glue Gun: Ad Tech, Cordless Glue Gun (it has a high and low heat setting, which I use ALL the time.)
- The Glue Sticks that work the best for me: Ad Tech, Multi Temp
- My favorite Epoxy Glue: Amazing Goop, Craft (This stuff holds amazingly well.)

- 1/2 yard of fabric: no name on selvage, but purchased at Joann Fabric
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Splurge by Donna Wilder
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Colorbook by Joann Fabric
- My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE pair of scissors, that are still sharper than sharp, 3 years later: Gingher’s (And my kids know to not even DARE use them on paper.)
And lastly……for Winner #3:
This one definitely needs a break down:
- Cover Button Kit (I use these a ton. Like here, here, and here.)
- Double Needle (More on the double needle here. I love using it on knits and clothing hems.)
- Universal Sewing Machine Needles (can’t have too many of these. ever.)
- Extra Bobbins (You can’t ever have too many of these either. I hate unwinding a bobbin to use it for another color.)
- 1 inch Wide Elastic….in 4 colors. ( I love this stuff. And have used it here, here, here, here, and here.)
- 1/8 inch wide Elastic (I use this a ton.)
- Cord Elastic (I use this a ton too.)
- 3/4 inch Elastic (okay, I use this a lot too…..all 3 elastic are nice to have on hand.)
- 7 inch Zippers. I have about 20 or so in my stash at all times. Different colors, different lengths, different types, etc. You never know when you’ll need one! ;)
- Safety Pins. Okay, you can’t do sewing OR crafting without safety pins on hand.
- Sewable Velcro. I use velcro so often, I think one must always have a little stash in their sewing stuff.
- Taylor’s chalk. When you need to mark your fabric but don’t want to (or can’t) use a pin….this stuff is cheap and simple.
- A Seam Ripper. Every professional has one. They’re not just for us wannabe’s…..so get used to ripping it out and trying it again! :)
- A big ol’ long Flexible Tape Measure. You need to measure around yourself or your subject. Get one!
And that’s it. A bit of this and a bit of that. And maybe you already have all these things. That’s okay, you can win this and add a few of your own favorites and gift it to a friend. I’m a little biased but I love this kind of stuff as a gift. :)

My fave tool is actually a pair of long intestinal clamps (snaffled from those pre-children days when I was a practicing veterinarian) Useful for so many things like gently poking out deep corners and pulling through.

My favorite tool right now is my Kam Snap pliers. I make cloth diapers for my baby but also love adding snaps to everything <3
Some of my favorites are punches. I’ve been trying to do more crafts with my girls so we use a lot of punches, scrapbook paper and glue!

I would have to say that my favorite crafting tool is my soon to be 5 year old daughter. I new basic sewing techniques before I had her, but when she came along she really gave the inspiration to try so many new sewing and crafting projects. Plus I have to admit that having a super sharp pair of eyes hunting down a wayward bobbin or spool of thread that has rolled under my sewing table is extremely helpful and time saving (as well as being a back saver!). :D

I LOVE Modge Podge! It’s become my best friends in setting up a new classroom in a new country, since I had to leave all my old stuff at home. Now every juice container, yogurt cup, and left over tin can gets jazzed up with scrapbook paper and Modge Podge for some repurposing as pencil cups and storage bins.

I love fabric scissors! It’s so much easier to cut fabric with scissors that have never touched paper, or anything else but fabric!
Love my rotary cutter. I started using it just for quilting and have learned that it is actually really handy when it comes to patterns too.
Silhouette machine is my fave. Simple favess are glue gun, glue dots, fabric, and paper cutter. Thanks for such a fun giveaway!

I would say that my favorite tool would have to be my marking pens, love them because they are washable

I know I have subscribed to this site, cuz I keep getting new crafting ideas from you. I have posted on the other sites that you asked for. So, now… I give you my favs.
Sewing: my heart throb, I love the tracing paper and wheel. I can do some mean damage with that stuff. When in a bind, do the grind. lol
Crafting is my livelihood. I honestly believe hot glue runs through my veins. I have 3 guns and they each do their own job. Am I crazy because of that? My hubby says yes. Men!
Would have to say my Janome my husband got me about 6 months ago :)
I LOVE ribbon! So many colors and patterns and so many uses!

My favorite sewing/crafting tool depends on what I am doing. Sewing has caught my fancy lately. I would say that after using some pretty junky seam rippers, I finally strung for a nice one and it has made a world of difference. It makes sewing projects so much easier and fun!

I ahve a pair of Gingher scissors…a very small pair…that I use when I do hand sewing or when I need to trim in close. I love the way the scissors handle, i love the weight of them and I especially love the way they cut.

I have a pair of embroidery scissors I keep by my sewing machine for clipping threads as I go. They are so much easier to pick up than regular ones, that I do clip as i go and never have to do any at the end of a project.
My favorite sewing tool has got to be my rotary cutter. Considering a bulk of what I tend to make is made much easier with a rotary cutter, my life since receiving it is a breeze when it comes to sewing!

The seam ripper is my go to for sewing. I have about 5 scattered around my sewing room and they are all used. I hate loosing them and having to buy more as a good ripper is hard to find.

Fantastic giveaway! My favorite tool is my sewing machine…she may be old (from the 1950′s!) but she gets the job done.

Besides my rotary cutter and huge cutting mat, I couldn’t live without a glue stick in my sewing room. I use it for so many things. Just a cheap school glue stick. I have a tin full of them sitting on my ironing board.

My favorite crafting item right now is my slash cutter! It makes cutting the channels on the chenille backed blankets SO fast :-)
Rotary cutter and mat. I cannot cut straight with scissors no matter how I try, so the rotary cutter is great for me!
Also, You unwind your bobbins??? As long as there’s room on it, I just layer the next color of thread over the top of what’s already on the bobbin.

My seam ripper. It’s the gingher seam ripper with retractable blade, and it’s changed how I feel about ripping seems. SO much better than the cheap ones you buy at Joann’s. Next to that, my serger. :)

I also love gingher scissors and wish I had some in a smaller size because they are fantastic! And elastic, and Velcro…I use those a ton. But scissors, it’s hard to get by without some good scissors

My favorite sewing tool is my 1982 Singer. My aunt gave it to me when I was in college. I use it all the time. That same aunt used it to make a flower girl dress for me to wear, when I was in her wedding. Now, I’ve used it to make her daughter, my cousin, a few baby blankets & other baby gifts. It’s a family treasure.

My favourite sewing tool…. let’s see – I think that would have to be my cutting mat, with the large acrylic ruler and rotary cutter that I treated myself to for my birthday! They came in a set, on offer in Jo-Ann’s – and it would have been rude not to have bought them! :o)

my favorite craft tool is actually not a tool but an old wooden chinese sewing box that sits in the hallway… everyone knows that this is were all craft knives, scissors, needles and threads etc are kept and to be returned to! It allows me to quickly get my craft tools when i need them knowing they will have (most of the time) been returned back there after they have been borrowed by numerous members of the household! actual tool would be the easel my father made me
