Okay, this is completely random.
But I just couldn’t resist.
I get asked pretty frequently what my Go-To sewing (and crafting) tools are. And as I was walking through Joann’s the other day (remember….there’s also Joann.com), I walked through an aisle of shiny new supplies and quickly realized why walking through a similar aisle would be really overwhelming to a beginner sewer/crafter. It’s hard to know what to buy and where to start. So, while I was picking up a few things for myself……I started throwing in a few things for one of you. And then threw in a few more (like it was Christmas or something), for another one of you. Before I knew it, I had enough little basic random tools for 3 of you. What fun is it to only have one winner, anyway?? Haha!
And besides, I love this blog. Some of you have become great online pals of mine. (And some of you I’ve even met……and have realized that I wished even more of you were available to yank out of this screen and chat with.) And because I sometimes wish I could sit right next to you and help you conquer some random technique that you’re afraid to try, this is the next best thing. Give you a few things to maybe help scare that fear away. I know…..so random. But I just wanted to! :)
So, what are some (this is not a complete list) of my Basic Go-To types of tools/notions that I picked up for a few of you?? Well, a little of this and a little of that…..nothing too scary. But you can do a lot with these basics. Everything from my favorite scissors to my favorite glue gun……..and a few things in between.
**Keep in mind, this is not a complete list, by any means. There isn’t thread, straight pins, a pin cushion, etc. This was just a random sampling of some of the things I like!
**Oh, and no, this isn’t a sponsored (or paid) post. It’s just for fun, and purchased by me. :)
If you don’t have a Joann’s nearby (or some sort of craft store), you can also shop at Joann.com. I’ve ordered several things online when the store is out, or I just don’t have time to run to the store. Love it.
And everything shown here (except for maybe one or two of the fabrics) is from Joann’s. Easy.

- 1/2 yard of fabric: Lisette by Liesl and Co
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Chevron by Riley Blake Designs
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Lisette by Liesl and Co
- My ol’ trusty Glue Gun: Ad Tech, Cordless Glue Gun (it has a high and low heat setting, which I use ALL the time.)
- The Glue Sticks that work the best for me: Ad Tech, Multi Temp
- My favorite Epoxy Glue: Amazing Goop, Craft (This stuff holds amazingly well.)

- 1/2 yard of fabric: no name on selvage, but purchased at Joann Fabric
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Splurge by Donna Wilder
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Colorbook by Joann Fabric
- My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE pair of scissors, that are still sharper than sharp, 3 years later: Gingher’s (And my kids know to not even DARE use them on paper.)
And lastly……for Winner #3:
This one definitely needs a break down:
- Cover Button Kit (I use these a ton. Like here, here, and here.)
- Double Needle (More on the double needle here. I love using it on knits and clothing hems.)
- Universal Sewing Machine Needles (can’t have too many of these. ever.)
- Extra Bobbins (You can’t ever have too many of these either. I hate unwinding a bobbin to use it for another color.)
- 1 inch Wide Elastic….in 4 colors. ( I love this stuff. And have used it here, here, here, here, and here.)
- 1/8 inch wide Elastic (I use this a ton.)
- Cord Elastic (I use this a ton too.)
- 3/4 inch Elastic (okay, I use this a lot too…..all 3 elastic are nice to have on hand.)
- 7 inch Zippers. I have about 20 or so in my stash at all times. Different colors, different lengths, different types, etc. You never know when you’ll need one! ;)
- Safety Pins. Okay, you can’t do sewing OR crafting without safety pins on hand.
- Sewable Velcro. I use velcro so often, I think one must always have a little stash in their sewing stuff.
- Taylor’s chalk. When you need to mark your fabric but don’t want to (or can’t) use a pin….this stuff is cheap and simple.
- A Seam Ripper. Every professional has one. They’re not just for us wannabe’s…..so get used to ripping it out and trying it again! :)
- A big ol’ long Flexible Tape Measure. You need to measure around yourself or your subject. Get one!
And that’s it. A bit of this and a bit of that. And maybe you already have all these things. That’s okay, you can win this and add a few of your own favorites and gift it to a friend. I’m a little biased but I love this kind of stuff as a gift. :)

Lately I have been on a big elastic thread kick, so right now it is my favorite sewing item. It is so quick and easy and therefore so satisfying to use!

My favorite tool might be freezer paper. I love using it to make patterns because it doesn’t rip as easily as normal paper. I also use it to make stencils to decorate onesies for my little guy.

My favorite tool would be my Pins. They were my grandma’s and a lot of her sewing supplies were given to me. They are in the originally case and they have big yellow pin heads. I think of her every time I sew.

Hands down my favorite sewing item is my seam ripper…..Yes I said it :)….Mainly because every one makes a mistake now and then. The seam ripper is the coverup of sewing :D I know first hand removing stitching with scissors equals fail :P

Hmm. My favorite crafting tool is hands down my Silhouette Cameo that I was convinced to buy just over a year ago thanks to YOUR blog! I have used it to cut fabric for sewing and use it for every possible craft from decorating my house to cards to birthday parties! Does that count? :)

My favorite tool are my Grandmother’s scissors. I don’t remember the brand (I think it’s German, not Gingher). They’re older than I am and still so sharp. They fit my hand ‘just right’, too.

I’d have to say my favorite tool is my rotary cutter. When I first saw one, I thought “how is a pizza cutter supposed to make cutting fabric easier?” But then my sister showed me how amazing it was when she was making a quilt. It is amazing how much you can cut at the same time…and amazing how much time you can save doing it!
Can I also tell you my least favorite tool? It is my glue gun. Not just glue guns in general, but MY glue gun. I bought it when I was a poor college student. I got the cheapest thing I could find….just something to get me by. I finished college 11 years ago and I still have not bought a new one. I can’t seem to justify spending the money when I already have one…crappy as it may be…so I still have my little cheapy. I’m glad to see what kind of glue gun you like! So even if I don’t win it, at least I have an idea of what to get when I do give in. :)

My favorite tool(s)???? My seam ripper (guess why), my sewing machine, good scissors (I can’t come up with just one!!) I’m starting to sew again after 20 years & I am having to replace everything!!! My favorite sewing supply is my chalk-line runner… I can’t think of it’s official name, but instead of marking pencils where the chalk lead always breaks off, these are SUPER easy to use w/rulers, too!

i am definitely one of those people that are overwhelmed in the sewing aisle, so this is really helpful! i’m just a beginner at sewing, but i do love my sewing machine. i am more of a paper crafter and i even use it on my homemade cards!

When it comes to crafting, I couldn’t live without my glue gun. *On a little side-note, my glue gun and I are not on speaking terms at the moment. I tried making one of those super cute ruffled coffee filter wreaths and ended up with third degree burns on my fingers. Bah! But, I never stay mad for too long. I am sure we’ll be back together, crafting up a storm, in no time at all. (you know, as soon as my fingers heal) haha.

My favorite sewing tool is my pair of Gingher 4″ embroidery scissors. They work so much better for ripping out seams than a seam ripper. I couldn’t sew without them.

My favorite sewing tool…too hard to pick! Top of the list would be my sewing machine, a real ironing board (I was using a tint tabletop one for way too long), magnetic pin cushion, and my sewing box my husband gave me that’s actually a tool box.

The French Curve ruler is my favorite because it’s so easy to blend seams which I almost always do with dresses.

My favorite crafting/sewing tool is a sharp pair of scissors. Dull just won’t do, and “Mom’s” scissors are known throughout the land as the best around. The kids know that they are special and useful. I don’t have a lot of other crafting materials, but when I have something to get done, those “Mom” scissors come out every time.
