Okay, this is completely random.
But I just couldn’t resist.
I get asked pretty frequently what my Go-To sewing (and crafting) tools are. And as I was walking through Joann’s the other day (remember….there’s also Joann.com), I walked through an aisle of shiny new supplies and quickly realized why walking through a similar aisle would be really overwhelming to a beginner sewer/crafter. It’s hard to know what to buy and where to start. So, while I was picking up a few things for myself……I started throwing in a few things for one of you. And then threw in a few more (like it was Christmas or something), for another one of you. Before I knew it, I had enough little basic random tools for 3 of you. What fun is it to only have one winner, anyway?? Haha!
And besides, I love this blog. Some of you have become great online pals of mine. (And some of you I’ve even met……and have realized that I wished even more of you were available to yank out of this screen and chat with.) And because I sometimes wish I could sit right next to you and help you conquer some random technique that you’re afraid to try, this is the next best thing. Give you a few things to maybe help scare that fear away. I know…..so random. But I just wanted to! :)
So, what are some (this is not a complete list) of my Basic Go-To types of tools/notions that I picked up for a few of you?? Well, a little of this and a little of that…..nothing too scary. But you can do a lot with these basics. Everything from my favorite scissors to my favorite glue gun……..and a few things in between.
**Keep in mind, this is not a complete list, by any means. There isn’t thread, straight pins, a pin cushion, etc. This was just a random sampling of some of the things I like!

If you don’t have a Joann’s nearby (or some sort of craft store), you can also shop at Joann.com. I’ve ordered several things online when the store is out, or I just don’t have time to run to the store. Love it.
And everything shown here (except for maybe one or two of the fabrics) is from Joann’s. Easy.

- 1/2 yard of fabric: Lisette by Liesl and Co
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Chevron by Riley Blake Designs

- My ol’ trusty Glue Gun: Ad Tech, Cordless Glue Gun (it has a high and low heat setting, which I use ALL the time.)
- The Glue Sticks that work the best for me: Ad Tech, Multi Temp
- My favorite Epoxy Glue: Amazing Goop, Craft (This stuff holds amazingly well.)

- 1/2 yard of fabric: no name on selvage, but purchased at Joann Fabric
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Splurge by Donna Wilder
- 1/2 yard of fabric: Colorbook by Joann Fabric
- My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE pair of scissors, that are still sharper than sharp, 3 years later: Gingher’s (And my kids know to not even DARE use them on paper.)
And lastly……for Winner #3:
This one definitely needs a break down:
- Cover Button Kit (I use these a ton. Like here, here, and here.)
- Double Needle (More on the double needle here. I love using it on knits and clothing hems.)
- Universal Sewing Machine Needles (can’t have too many of these. ever.)
- Extra Bobbins (You can’t ever have too many of these either. I hate unwinding a bobbin to use it for another color.)
- 1 inch Wide Elastic….in 4 colors. ( I love this stuff. And have used it here, here, here, here, and here.)
- 1/8 inch wide Elastic (I use this a ton.)
- Cord Elastic (I use this a ton too.)
- 3/4 inch Elastic (okay, I use this a lot too…..all 3 elastic are nice to have on hand.)
- 7 inch Zippers. I have about 20 or so in my stash at all times. Different colors, different lengths, different types, etc. You never know when you’ll need one! ;)
- Safety Pins. Okay, you can’t do sewing OR crafting without safety pins on hand.
- Sewable Velcro. I use velcro so often, I think one must always have a little stash in their sewing stuff.
- Taylor’s chalk. When you need to mark your fabric but don’t want to (or can’t) use a pin….this stuff is cheap and simple.
- A Seam Ripper. Every professional has one. They’re not just for us wannabe’s…..so get used to ripping it out and trying it again! :)
- A big ol’ long Flexible Tape Measure. You need to measure around yourself or your subject. Get one!
And that’s it. A bit of this and a bit of that. And maybe you already have all these things. That’s okay, you can win this and add a few of your own favorites and gift it to a friend. I’m a little biased but I love this kind of stuff as a gift. :)

I love those Gingher scissors too, but I think my favorite craft tool is a marked measuring cutting mat which exactly fits my craft table – it makes cutting out larger geometric shapes super easy – throw the mat on the table, no pattern, just cut. Fantastic.

At girls camp we made about a thousand of those covered button rings — that was 3 years ago and I still get compliments on them when I wear them! Such a quick, fun craft (and tool). What an awesome giveaway!

I finally got my grandma’s old serger that she gave me threaded (ok, I took it to someone else who threaded it for me!). And am loving having a serger! It is definitely a favorite!

My favorite sewing tool is my flimsy 18″ quilters ruler with the 1/8″ grid. I use that thing for everything: sewing, crafting, drawing. I even melted one once trying to use it to iron pin tucks. Love it!
My favorite tool (and most necessary) is the seam-ripper! I am very new to this craft and I am not adept and sewing straight lines yet. :)

My favorite sewing tool is a little pair of scissors (this particular pair was made by Tonic) that are sharp all the way to the point. Whenever I have to snip seams or curves, I’m always afraid I’ll snip too much and cut through my stitching. But, because these are sharp right at the tip, I have much more control over how much I cut. My favorite sewing supply is zippers- I love making zippered pouches (mostly so I can get zippers in fun colors).

My absolute fave tool to have on hand when I’m sewing is my small, orange handled, super sharp all the way to the tip, Fisker scissors. Use them a million times per project.

Oh gosh I think my bright green seam ripper is my most used tool. I have a handful of the generic blue ones but one day I spotted the green one and thought maybe I wouldn’t lose track of it if it were prettier :) And it’s true! I never lose it and it’s my best friend…very forgiving of my mistakes and it helps me move on!

I love my cricut cutter although I do struggle with it – it is a learning experience everytime! A good old pair of scissors that are sharp and pass your test would be much better! x

My favorite sewing tool has to be a lethally sharp pair of embroidery scissors. With those, I can rip a seam, trim a bit of fabric, cut threads, and defend my snacks from would-be-munchers. And they are portable because they are small.

My all-time favorite tool is my little clips for piecing fabric together. Sooooo much easier than pins, it doesn’t pucker, and it helps keep track of my seam allowance. Love love love!

My favortie tool is my rotary cutter. I never knew how much I used it until last week when it broke right before the huge snowstorm was due to hit. I knew I couldn’t wait for the company to send a replacement and was not going to be stuck without a cutter so I drove 30 miles just to buy a new one.

My favorite versatile craft tool is my glue gun…but yours looks way cooler! The cord on mine is always keeping if from standing correctly, and now with a toddler, I can’t use it while she’s awake for fear that she’ll grab the cord and burn herself. Favorite tool… Hmm that is a hard one. I got an embroidery machine this week. I’m a bit scared to get started, but I know I just need to get it going and I’ll love it. As far as non machines, I hadn’t used one in a looooong time, but yesterday I was trying to make a hexagon pattern for a quilt block and after many failed tries I remembered my good old compass was in my desk drawer. Nothing better than using the RIGHT tools for a job. :)

Great idea!!! As a beginner, every day I realize I need something new (or some scary tool) to keep growing! I can’t live without the seam ripper! I love the zippers and the double needle but I’m still afraid of using them. These sets will be a tremendous guide for me to keep practicing and practicing. You will never believe this, but my mother in law gave me a men’s battery powered shaver for christmas to rip seams…It works so incredibly well, that I have given up all other seam rippers! It is no longer a daunting task!!! :) You should try it out!
What type of men’s shaver, what does it look like? I hate ripping out seems and would love something that makes the job quicker and easier.
