You’d think I’d be a pro at unpacking…

Well, in case you missed it, we moved again.  And yeah, unpacking is a little slow going.  I haven’t been doing much emailing (so I’m sorry if you’re waiting for a response) but I have read all the comments from my last post.  Thanks for the well wishes.  My favorite comment was from Sewil from Russia (Hi Sewil!!)……..she said that in Russia, 1 move is equal to 2 fires and 1 flood.  Ha.  Made me feel better.

And whoever mentioned that the master bedroom tends to end up with all the junk and random boxes of stuff…….you’re totally right.  Same thing happens here.  Now hmmmm, where will I put those Easter baskets that are stacked on our unmade bed.  (I think it’s a rule that if your room is this messy…….you don’t have to make your bed.  So I’m stickin’ to it!)

One good thing about moving…..is that you find lost things.  Like our box of dress-ups.  This little lady has been flitting around in random pieces of dress-up clothing, happy as a clam.

And don’t worry, these 2 are keeping themselves busy.  I keep overhearing their make-believe games that they’re playing amongst all the chaos.  My favorite one so far was that they were dragon slayers…….and all of the boxes were dragons.  That round of make-believe kept them VERY busy.

While those 2 flit around……..I keep trying to tackle the mess.  But the more boxes I open, the more mess I create.  Ha.  I’ll get there one of these days.  Or weeks.

Oh, and this one.  She thinks she’s a master un-packer.  Well, she is.  She rips things out of those boxes faster than anyone around.  Here she is, plotting her next move.

But things really are going well.  Don’t worry about us for one minute.  Especially since the owners of this home left their hot tub out back.  Like, all heated and well taken care of.  I guess since they moved to FL, they can just go hop in the beautiful ocean water……no need to haul a hot tub along with them.  We sat in it last night, under a chilly starry night, while those samurai jets pounded our aching backs, and wondered why we haven’t ever purchased one of these before.  (Oh yeah, they cost money.)  We’re happy to take care of it while we’re here.

Oh, did I hear you say you wanted to help?  I’ll save this box for you.

Anyway, in case you’re wondering, I do have a little something saved up…….I just need to finish adding a few things to the tutorial.  I’ll put it up next week.  I’m kind of in love with it!!! :)

Enjoy your weekend.  And find someone with a hot tub…….and relax.

-Ashley

I think unpacking is worse than packing or moving…it takes forever and you have to make more mess before you can make less mess! Hope it gets done soon for you!

I agree with Danny. I just realized that we’ve lived in this apartment for a year now and still have 3 boxes that I keep moving from 1 closet to another because I don’t want to unpack the knick knacks inside! We had to move 3 times last year, and it just didn’t seem worth it I guess.

Good Luck to you guys though! Hopefully you don’t run out of steam before you run out of boxes ; D

I must be the crazy one. I loathe packing, it takes me ages to organize all the boxes. Unpacking takes me a couple days, a week at the most. When I was a kid every time we moved my room was the first one unpacked. I really like to organize and find homes for all of my stuff. :)

I’m exactly like you Grace. I hate packing stuff into boxes (takes me WEEKS!!!) but once I’m there it’s like I’m possessed and in a whirlwind, everything finds a place and it’s done before I know it!

Grace, you are more than welcome to come to my place. Ashley sorry no help from me. I’ve moved into my house with all my treasures in 2008, hubby moved in with all his crap shortly after. Then we were married in 2009, which added more goodies, then a baby in 2010. In 2011 I went into the spare bedroom filled with boxes from my move in 08…I gave up! Here’s to you completing yours! You can do it Ashley

Boxes make the best play forts for little ones…and a great canvas to paint a cottage or rocket ship! Problem is they have to be empty first!

We moved on New Years Eve, and have several boxes shoved into a closet that we haven’t unpacked yet. We also found boxes that we hadn’t opened from the last time we moved…. three years ago. I hate unpacking.

It is such a blessing that your kids are content while you organize and unpack! And it always seems to help things go smoother when you need to stay focused! I am so happy to hear that you get to relax a little in that hot tub–and I am a little jealous! :-)

the previous owners of our house had a hot tub too. Unfortunately we weren’t as lucky. They took it with them. But from what I hear from the neighbors we wouldn’t want to get in the tub if they had left it. Didn’t go into details but I’ll take their word for it. Enjoy your unpacking. The great thing about moving is that you get to create a home from scratch. I love that part for some reason. It takes awhile but I never feel bored or blah because I have a mission that I can really get into. Looking forward to see what you have in store for us as well. Congratulations on your new adventure!

I hate those boxes of stuff that have nowhere to go! I think I could figure out where to put the hangers . . . but that’s about it. :) Good luck!

If it makes you feel any better – my house looks worse than these photos and we moved 6 months ago :) It takes sooooo long to get everything where you want it. Your children look so blissfully happy. I love it when children get their imagination working and create the games that money can’t buy.

Thanks for sharing! Makes my mess seem less alone in the world. We just moved too…again. This is our six move in 6 and 1/2 years of marriage and life is just chaotic right now. We are getting good at packing and unpacking too but this move was different in that my daughter is just 5 weeks old (we moved when she was just 4 weeks) and my two small boys (20 months and 3 years) are loving the feeling of Christmas in April because some boxes were left packed after the last move 6 months ago. Thanks for sharing!

PROPS for showing what a real move looks like! Unfortunately; I’ve lived in my current location for 3 years and there are still days were I feel as though my house looks just like your photos. Love it! :) Kristen Mentasti/Tickled Tutu

Good luck with the unpacking… the house looks GORGEOUS though! I guess the best part of you moving so often is that you get to redecorate again and we all get to steal your ideas and inspiration :)

Love seeing picture of your babies; always makes me smile. Mine are grown up, but some of our fondest memories are of the wonderful imagination-fueled games they played. And I agree with your comment from your previous post: TV does suck the life out of them, which is why it was hardly ever on in our house. Congratulations on your new home; it looks beautiful :)

I moved to a much smaller house, and it looks like you have quite a bit of space, so I know you’ll be okay someday. There are no closets in my small house. I am not amused.

This encourages me. We are moving for the fifth time in two years. I feel like we have stuff all over the state of California, and I am really hoping to find some fun surprises when we unpack for *hopefully* the last time for a while!!

I’m a total pro mover! We’ve moved in and out of 4 states in 4 years, hubs is in the Military. Every single time I have had the entire house unpacked in 48 hours or less. I get up get some cappuccino and roll up my sleves. Starting in the kitchen (most important) and work my way down. Unpacking and organizing every room. By the 2nd or 3rd day I have frames waiting for the hubs to hang up. It’s a lot of work and you’ll wake up like a truck hit you the next morning but it is SO worth it! Maybe I’m a little crazy but with all the moves I figure I better get unpacked before they pack us again! :)

I feel your pain – we moved last month for the 9th time in 10 years. We rent too, which at least makes the moving around easier in some ways.
When we were younger and moved, it was easy to unpack. Not so easy with three kids helping, as we have and you have. But I totally agree, the kids are just as happy playing in chaos… my older two have kept themselves quite happy, even with all their toys packed away. One day they played with a roll of toilet paper and a ball of yarn and two markers for an ENTIRE afternoon. So I have purposefully still not unpacked some of their toys! :)

Good luck to you – I really enjoy your blog and look forward to making some of your sewing tutorials, if ever, oh if ever, we are unpacked. And props to you for showing what a real move looks like – that is exactly what our place has been for weeks! One day…

I know your pictures shouldn’t make me this happy, but misery loves company! Our family is moving next Saturday- complete nightmare! It makes me a little happy to know someone else dislikes moving as much as I do! And I think unpacking is way harder than packing! Its like a puzzle and every box I open looks like a drunk person found the most random items in every room possible to dump inside the box. Unfortunately, I’m the one packing and I’m pretty sure no one spiked my diet Coke….. :) Love your beautiful hardwood floors though! They make me happy!
