We’ve moved. Again.

We have so much junk.  And I’m happy to say that this move (the 6th one in our 6 1/2 years of marriage) is the first one where we didn’t have to haul the boxes onto our moving truck.  Steve’s new job paid for it.  (Hallelujah!)  So we packed it all into boxes……..while someone else hauled it all upstairs and onto a truck.  I felt a little guilty watching someone else haul my heavy stuff and had to tell myself several times, “leave them alone. this is their job. they don’t want your help.”  It was strange.  Besides, my body isn’t made for that kind of back hauling work.  Whew.

And while the workers worked and Steve and I finished up last minute craziness, the little ones were watching a little “Super Why” to keep busy.  Completely oblivious to what was going on around them.  In fact, when we were all done and we flipped off the TV, they looked around completely confused, and asked where all of their stuff was.  TV really sucks the life out of them.

Glad that part of the move is over.

Now, onto round 2.

We just received keys Monday night (yes, still renters) and have moved back into a home of our own.  Remember how we just barely left Savannah, GA last June?  And then we drove and drove some more and then dropped off a stowaway cockroach in Kansas (do any of you remember reading that? ha, cracks me up to read that again!)………before finding ourselves in Colorado?  If you remember, we moved right into my parents basement apartment while my husband finished his clinical rotations for P.A. school in surrounding hospitals and clinics.  Living in my parents basement for the past 10 months has been so helpful.  And perfect for our situation.  We have really been so spoiled.  I will miss the days that I say to my kids, “What?! You’re bored?! Uhhhh….me too.  Let’s go upstairs and see what grandma and grandpa are doing!“  Or, “Hey mom, my kids are sleeping………will you listen for them on the monitor while I run to the store?“  Or what I may miss the most is while trying to drag all 3 kids out to car in the freezing temps, and my mom stops me while trying to step out the door and says, “hey, why don’t you leave the kids here?  I’m not doing anything.“  And then my dads chimes in, “Yeah, me either.  Leave them here!“  I will miss that.

And while it was so nice to have our own space in the basement……….we were kind of bursting at the seams.  So we are pretty excited to have our own home again.  My husband is finally done with P.A. school and just has to finish certifying (a big test and lots of paperwork).

Anyway, we have only moved a few hours away from family (still in Colorado though)…..but we will miss being so close.  And holy smokes, I will miss taking turns making dinner with my mom.  And my sister.  We swapped dinner duty the entire time living there.  Totally a win-win for all.  Maybe I can find a next door neighbor who wants the same gig? ;)

Anyway, changes are keeping us busy this week.

But, I have a few things saved up.  So you’ll see me around.

Wish me luck trying to decide which drawer will be the silverware drawer, the hot pad drawer, and the tin foil drawer.  Oh, and someone please tell me where I should store those few boxes of junk that just sit around while you’re unpacking because you just don’t know where to put the items that are inside.  Ugggh.  I know you know what I’m talking about. ;)

I can SOO relate. I’ve been married 15 years to my HS sweetheart, have 3 boys (1 born in each state we’ve lived in) and 4 weeks ago moved from VA to FL. We spent 4 years in PA/6 years in 3 towns in VA and a few years before that in FL. We are finally HOME near family and plan to stay here a long time (crossing fingers!!) I must say that having people pack up and move for you is awesome!

Enjoy your new home and hope you can stay put awhile! Cindy

Oh man, moving is all we did for our first 3 years of marriage! We moved probably 8-10 times across Utah because of school/internships/summer jobs. Thankfully we didn’t have kids yet (the first one is due next week!), but it was still rough. I’m so glad you guys had moving people this time! I’m sure that helps a lot! And good luck with those boxes of things that are looking for homes. We’ve been in our home for 9 months and I still have a few things that are tucked away in a closet without a real ‘home.’ I hope that your home is awesome, and I hope that things go well with your husband’s new job!

Good luck with settling in! I have those boxes of junk sitting around that I don’t know what to do with just from moving furniture around to different places. You know, the “I’ll just clear off the desk while we move it and put all of it back when we’re done,” type boxes. On a side note, I really love your blog! We are kind of on the other side of the school tunnel, just finishing up undergrad and applying to PA (me, hopefully) and dental (him) school with our little guy and one more coming in the next few months! It’s lovely to have people to look up to and see it IS possible and there IS an end in sight! (And I also just got a sewing machine a few months ago and have a pinterest board filled with links to your blog of things to try now that exams are over & before the baby gets here! Post more boy things-ha!)

I’ve only moved once as an adult and it was about 200 yards from our trailer on the back of our property into our home we had built. So there was no moving truck, there was my Mom and I packing boxes and my husband and Dad driving them to the house and coming back. Still…it took me a month to get everything settled and situated. I don’t envy you at all, but wish you best of luck getting all of those box contents into their new homes. :)

Good luck with all the unpacking and sorting out of stuff! It seems to grow as you unpack … After moving from Europe to Australia we still have a dozen boxes in the garage that were opened and we thought we didn´t really need that stuff, so they are still there! Time to throw the stuff out I think! I would hate to move again, I think every time I move I have more stuff!!!

We just moved to CO a few weeks ago and I still have unpacked boxes. As for the ones you mentioned with contents that has no home yet, I stacked them all under my desk and on top to the ceiling. Yes, I have a lot of those boxes with…junk in them. Which town did you move to?

Oh man I’m in the same boat! We just bought a house and close on May 24th. To save some money we are moving out of where we currently live and in with my mom until we close. While we are at my mom’s everything that can stay packed is staying packed!! Good luck finding places for all the odds and ends from the boxes.

Good luck unpacking! We’ve moved many times already in our short 5 years of marriage and have never hired movers (have had lots of help from our church ward though). Thankfully I’ve been pregnant or holding the newborn during each move so I’ve pretty much never had to lift a box. We’re moving again in about a month (finally BOUGHT a house, not renting) but, low and behold, I’m pregnant again. Sorry hubby :-)

For this move, all the spare boxes of stuff will go in the new baby’s room until I can figure out where it all goes (not due until October). All my other moves, I’ve shoved everything that didn’t belong somewhere in our master bedroom. It usually takes a month or two before the master bedroom gets done.

Ugh – we’re getting ready for our 7th move in 3.5 years. I can’t imagine doing it with kids! I always feel bad about watching the movers, too, but this time we’re not hiring so I guess the joke’s on me ;) I hope the rest of the move goes smoothly!

ugh – moving is rough!! thankfully, we haven’t moved too many times. our biggest move was from arizona to colorado (all previous moves were in arizona – within 10 – 15 miles of each other). i hope the unpacking goes well. where in colorado did you move to? i’m in highlands ranch …

Our moving day may be here sooner than I would like as we’re building a house (that will be completed at the latest in Nov) and already have our house on the market (and if it sells then we may have to move twice – fun fun!). I’m praying for the perfect buyer who can hold out until the first of November to close! ;) Good luck finding a home for those boxes of miscellaneous items.

    Carolyn says:

Good luck unpacking! The last time I moved we had the luxury of moving a few boxes at a time. I can’t imagine what it was like boxing everything up (with three little ones in tow)! I’m sure, though, that you’ll make it look easy, just like everything else you do!

    Kelly Hamon says:

Yep, I don’t like moving either. in 2010 we moved from Buffalo, NY to Raymond Alberta Canada. We moved from a two floor home, full basement and double garage to a single wide trailer—not so easy. Talk about having too many things? We had to sell, throw out and/or give away tons of our things–yep I don’t like the moving process either :)

I say if you can’t find a place for the junk, THROW IT AWAY!!! :) I am NOT a hoarder, so I am constantly throwing things away or giving things away. If I didn’t need it/use it for 6 months (or longer if its a seasonal thing) then I get rid of it… Very seldom have I wished I kept something!!

We’re gearing up fo our move from California to Ohio! I totally know what you mean about junk boxes. Heck, I think we still have one or two that are UNPACKED from our move from Alaska to Ohio 4 years ago! The nice thing about the Coast Guard is that they come and not only pack load our boxes, but they pack them too. Such a blessing to get any sort of help when you have to move. Good luck!

I currently live in my parents basement with my husband and our two kids, and it can be so convienent. My 14 year old brother still lives there too so, there’s usuallly always someone there to help keep the kids happy. We moved two times in the past two years and I can feel your pain. One thing I recommend is getting that sewing room set up sooner than I did. I was twitching after a month of not even knowing where my tub of all of my notions was or having a spot to sew. I finally got that last box of odd and ends you mentioned put away a few weeks ago and it’s starting to feel like home!

Congratulations on graduating! I think the wife deserves just as much credit as the student. That is hard work supporting a PA student. And good luck with the move!

My husband will be starting his rotations this fall and we are getting ready to move after he finishes classes in the summer. You give me hope for a light at the end of the tunnel!

Again, good luck and congratulations! I love your blog. Thank you so much for sharing so many tutorials.

Guess what?! We TOTALLY have that setup with our neighbors, so I know its possible! Okay, not that exact one, but dinner one night every week that we rotate. And, junk is best kept in your room until you find a place for it, out of sight for guests, and out of reach for the kiddos!

  34. 34

I read once in an organizing book about keeping things close to where you use them. I know this is pretty obvious, especially in the kitchen, but I find that as I’m reorganizing if I can keep that in my mind, it helps.

I have an answer for this: “Oh, and someone please tell me where I should store those few boxes of junk that just sit around while you’re unpacking because you just don’t know where to put the items that are inside.” :) Those boxes go straight to your local donation center. ;) Trust me, you’ll never miss the stuff in them anyway. I know I’ve moved more than you have! My hubby and I are about to celebrate our 9th anniversary in a couple of days and we have moved at least nine times (I may have forgotten one or two when I was counting – no joke!) during out marriage. And most of those summers were spent traveling from Utah to Michigan and back again, so it’s almost like moving minus the trailer!

Good luck!!!!! You have my sympathy (we’ll be moving at least two more times before we finish school and have a “permanent” home)! (((((HUGS)))))
