I think the hardest thing about eating healthier is figuring out portions and calorie consumption, etc. Ugh. It’s such a pain. However, if you’re really trying to monitor what you’re eating and/or count up calories, carbs, cholesterol, sodium, sugars, etc. you just have to plow through it until you get better at recognizing how much stuff is in everything.

Okay, okay…we’ve gotta put forth more effort. Check.

Do you want to see the coolest little tool that’s going to save you a lot of time? Something that will give you accuracy so that you’re not overeating without knowing it, then getting frustrated with your body for not changing?

Best Buy sent me the Perfect Portions – Food Scale with Nutritional Calculator that instantly tells me exactly what’s in my portion of food, just like looking at the nutrition label on a box of food from the store. Pretty dang cool. I no longer have to figure everything out. This little beauty does all the calculations for me.

You know how it’s annoying to figure out, “Hmmmmm, okay, 1 serving of chicken is my fist size, but this is probably one and a half fists. So, uh?” Or is this a “small” sized apple or a “medium” sized one? Who knows! Grrrrr. This scale cuts out all that guesswork. It weighs it, calculates it, then tells me what I need to know. It even has a feature to keep a running total of stats for the day. Cool.

The Perfect Portions Scale has about 2,000 food items stored in its memory, but it also allows for an additional 99 food entries. I can add and save unusual foods I may have in my diet and then recall them at any time. Again, cool.

So here’s how it works. You look up your food item in the food code book (which is plastic coated and very well organized) and find the code for what you’re going to eat. I wanted almonds, which are code 0631. So I entered that code into the scale.

Then I plopped my almonds right on top and watched my info come up instantly. If you can see, the calories pop up as 121. If I want less, I can just take off one almond at a time until I get down to the calories I want. Then I can scoop them off and gobble them up. Easy.

Here’s a pear that I placed down on the scale, happy to know I didn’t have to figure out the calories by labeling it a “medium” or “small” pear. The scale figured out exactly how many calories, carbs, sugars, etc are in that one little pear. Ooooh, I love it!

So, even though the top of the scale is glass and really easy to clean, you can’t really plop liquid stuff right down on top, like yogurt, for example. So you can place a bowl down first, ‘auto tare’ the scale (balance it out at zero) by pressing ZERO, and then plug in the number for your item. Yogurt is 0821.

Then you add your yogurt in by the scoopful and watch as the nutrition facts change instantly with each scoop. Ooooops, too much yogurt? Just scoop a little back out and put it back in the yogurt container for another day. Ahhhhh, perfectly portioned.

Okay, now seriously, how many times have you just “guessed” how much you were eating or what the calculations were? No more of that for me. You know it’s hard to count out exactly how many crackers/chips/pretzels from a bag by following the serving size number on a food package. They’re always broken or different sizes. I don’t have to count anymore or puzzle piece chip bits back together to equal one chip. Or even do the math if I just want to add 10 more calories to my portion.

This scale has earned a permanent spot right on my counter. You could say we’re friends now.

This scale would be so helpful in calculating my portions quickly. Right now I am using an ancient WW scale my father-in-law gave me. It’s old school metal with a small plastic dish on top! I love how the newer electronic scales enter all the nutritional information as well!

  17. 17
    Paige says:

That is really neat. Now that my baby is six months old I’m ready to get serious about weight loss, so this would be a wonderful tool.

  19. 19

I would love having this scale! My husband was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 years ago. This would help a ton with counting carbs and with regulating portions. Thanks for the opportunity!

  21. 21
    Heffalump says:

I’d love one of these. It’s always a hassle trying to eyeball exactly how much of something I am eating. When I keep my food journal I kind of have to guess and I often end up trying to err on the side of caution which sometimes keeps me from eating the amount I should be eating because I am worried about going over calories.

  22. 22
    Erin Johnson says:

Oh man, I would love to have this! I have 4 kids 5 and under, with a set of twins turning 1 in February…needless to say I don’t have a ton of time to sit and figure out everything I’m eating!

  23. 23
    Alisha says:

Ugh. The food scale that I have (and have been using for every meal for a while now) is just a plain old scale. I have to look up calorie content online, then weigh, then multiply. None of this is actually *difficult*, but it sure is a pain in the patootie when I’m STARVING and just want to eat my food! ;o) I do love using a scale, though, because it trains me to recognize an *actual* serving size, and there is hope that some day in the future I’ll just automatically know a proper serving size by looking at food and I can let my scale rest!

  24. 24
    Clarissa says:

Oh my goodness, that is cool!!! I know my diet is a bit part of my failure at being in shape and even when I’m trying to be smart I know I make stupid decisions. I think it’d be so fun to have this scale to keep me accountable. Plus I’m sure my husband would think its pretty cool too.

  25. 25
    Kristin says:

That scale is awesome! It feels like so much of our produce is bigger than a serving and it would be nice to acurately watch what I am eating.

  26. 26
    Kim says:

I’d love to win this! I’m always afraid I’m not getting enough servings of fruits/veggies/protein–but I know my idea of what the right portion size is completely wrong–so in reality, I could possibly be getting the right amount. This scale takes away all the guesswork! PERFECT!

    Jenny S. says:

This would help me lose my goal of 10 pounds!

  32. 32
    Susan says:

I’d love this scale because my husband tracks his calories and I’m in charge of making his lunch in the morning. I always end up guessing on the actual calories when I add fruit and nuts to his lunch. And it probably wouldn’t hurt if I had a more accurate idea of how much I’m eating! I like that it has the whole nutrition label right on the scale!

  33. 33
    Anahi says:

I would love this! I am currently on a quest to loose 60lbs by july 14th, (you can read about it here: http://wifeyknowsbest.tumblr.com/post/15240090671/lose60lbs )

if so, i would love to win one of these! i always try calorie counting to just let it slide because it’s too many steps weighing my food, and then trying to figure out the nutritional info afterward. i love this combines it!

  56. 56
    Rachel says:

I would love to win this scale! It would be much more convenient than the website I currently use. I have to “guess” at portion sizes and plus it in to a website. Who has time to plug things in to a computer while they are cooking?! This would be much more convenient!

  57. 57

I have done tons of healthy eating research because I believe wholeheartedly in the healthy lifestyle over the diet approach. I am really active with triathlons and am running my 3rd marathon on Sunday, so one could consider me “fit”. Unfortunately, I really struggle with portion control and mindless eating. I’ve been wanting a portion/calorie scale for a long time but having just graduated nursing school, it’s not really in my budget. So I’d would love this particular portion scale because it seems really straightforward and does the “thinking” part for you. I’m pinning this to my wish list :-)

  58. 58

I really need to lose a few inches off my belly after giving birth in October. My MIL actually patted my belly and said something about now that I’ve had a baby (actually 2 kids) I don’t get to be skinny anymore. My reply was that just because I’d had a baby doesn’t mean I have to be flabby. Now I need to back up my words!

    Aleta LeBlanc says:

I dont usually sign up for giveaways since i dont trust my luck but this is worth tempting my luck for!! I’m doing weight watchers online but I still have my whole family to cook for. Its impossible to cook only 1 portion of anything and hard to figure out what the portion size should be from the big skillet full. This would be so great for me!!!

  277. 277
    Amanda says:

That’s amazing! I would love to win one of these. I’m getting married in June, so I’ve been keeping track of calories on a spreadsheet. It’s so hard to calculate calories especially when you’re eating something that isn’t packaged. Unfortunately for me, healthy stuff like veggies don’t have a nutrition sticker on the side, so I tend to opt for things like lean cuisines or smartones, but those suckers have a lot of sodium. Even if I don’t win one I’ll probably look into buying one since my eyes are always bigger than the actual portion…that looks about a cup…

  278. 278

    Courtney says:

WOW I didn’t know anything like this existed! I have been wanting a food scale, but this one blows all of the other scales away! Like you, I have been very frustrated as I have tried to count calories, figure out portions, etc…I honestly get so frustrated most of the time that I give up. I just recently joined weight watchers and I have LOST in my first two weeks. YAY! This would be a perfect to weigh out my food so that I’m no longer guessing if I am eating 6 oz of chicken vs. 10 ounces. Taking out the guess work would be a HUGE help for both of us to get closer to our normal body weight. I still have 145 pounds at least but on my way!
