Crafty blogging vs. Family blogging (Plus the Zoo)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I love sewing and making things. I especially love being surprised when something works out better than imagined.  I love turning cast-offs into something useful.  And I really do love blogging.  It’s the perfect outlet.
Even more than those things though, I love our crazy crew of a family.  Even the weird schedules, tantrums at breakfast, scary dreams at 3am, and streaking after bath-time.  All of it.
I know this blog is a crafting one.   But sometimes, I sprinkle in a little bit about my family.  I just can’t help it.
So here’s the question:  Do you come over here to Make It and Love It for tutorials only and quickly click out of here when you see another family vacation picture or a random picture of my child doing somersaults off my couch (I should show you that one)?  Or do you like seeing a little life behind the scenes?
(I’m afraid I’ll continue with the family pics either way, but I’m just curious if you guys like to keep your blog themes separate.  Ha.)
Maybe I figure you must want to see a picture or two because sometimes I forget it’s not just a few of my closest friends and family looking in on what I’m sewing up today.  But come on, I see some of your names so often, I forget that you’re not going to knock on the door at any minute to share a smoothie with me…..(because that’s what I’m drinking right now. Yum.)  All of the Emily’s, Sarah’s, Brittany’s, Stephanie’s, etc………I see you ‘ol faithfuls chiming in with the sweetest of comments.  Okay, and the catchy little sign-in names like Goings on at the Glenns and Bethandodd and MeSewCrazy or SewCrazy or something with Sew in it, haha!   But I could just squeeze you all.
So maybe since I see you around here often, I figure you can all tolerate another picture of the kids.  I somehow can’t resist adding it to a post from time to time.
In case you hate it though, now’s the time to hurry and click away.
Because, we went to the zoo last week……….and let me tell you how much I love watching little ones at the zoo.  It’s intriguing.  Their faces fascinate me.  And their questions…….oh, their questions.  “No buddy, I don’t know why the gorilla has a pig puffy white bum.  No, it’s not a diaper.  Nope, you can’t touch it.  Er……..let’s go read the sign.”
If by looking at this picture you think he’s deep in thought……you’re wrong.  I just told him to not pick any more flowers.  So he’s staring at those flowers, deciding whether or not to listen.  Hard choice, huh?
For a second, this little guy was out of my view behind the stroller.  He wasn’t making one bit of sound…….so I looked closer.  The little turkey was sneaking the zoo snacks.  He wouldn’t even look at me, afraid I might tell him to put them away. Ha.
Oh, the goats.  Reminds me of our family raising goats.  And feeding them with bottles.
Have you ever fed a giraffe?  I hadn’t either.  This was by far our most favorite part about the zoo.  Now hurry and find out if your zoo lets you feed the giraffes.  $2 was well worth it.
The giggling, the waving of the leaves by little hands to beckon the giraffe over, the astonishment of their little eyes while watching such a big animal use the potty right in the dirt.  They shrieked.
((Sigh))  It’s been too long since we’ve paid a visit to the zoo.
So glad we went.
And maybe looking at the pictures helped you get your zoo fix too.
Enjoy your day.  (And drink a smoothie with me!)
. . . . .
Tomorrow will be back to the norm (which is still just as fun for me to blog about) so the others don’t have to click away! Ha.

I personally love the family pics & stories. It makes your blog more personal. Makes me feel better knowing that my kids aren't the only ones who do flips off the couch and pick the flowers at the zoo…LOL! Love the zoo pics. We need to head there too :) Esp love those baby pics. I had my 3rd baby (little girl) on 3/26 so I'm not too far behind you. It has been fun seeing all of your baby sewing projects! Thanks for sharing!

Ahhh the zoo. I haven't been in years! Think it is time for a trip with me and Monkey Man.
I fed a giraffe for the first time in 1993 at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado. I thought it was the weirdest and greatest thing ever!

crafty may be what brings me here- i love gathering inspiration out in the blogosphere- but the family part makes us become "blog friends" – it bonds us (mothers in particular i think) i think a blog without the personal touch is more of a "website" – :) have a wonderful day with your family! (then share)

This was interesting, too. I'm mostly interested in seeing pictures, I gues, that are different and fun to look at. I like the giraffe's tongue picture. ha hhaha

I love being able to see behind the scenes and know that the blogs I read are run by real people. People whose kids are sweet and crazy just like mine. The zoo pictures are great. Maybe we should go to the zoo again soon. :)

I have family blogged for many years (like when blogging first started) It was great and I loved keeping up with all my friends since we all moved away from each other. Then I found your blog and I started coming to your blog for my crafting fix and then when crafting projects were taking over my family blog my sister and I started a crafting blog. Since then I struggle with how personal I should get on the craft blog, or if it should just be tutorials, and yet I find that my favorite craft blogs share family stuff too, which is why yours is my top favorite! I am a mom, and while I love to craft I get ideas from other life stuff too, like taking my kids to the zoo, it's been awhile and that sounds like a great idea! Oh and p.s thank you so much for sharing the cascade ruffles I have been wanting to learn how to do those forever but everywhere I saw how before you seemed too difficult. You are amazing!

I love everything about your blog. I seriously never miss a post, even if it's a tutorial on something that I'm not interested in doing myself. Family posts let us see a little about where you come from. They make me marvel all the more that you have the time and energy to be so creative.

And I think you're doing the blogging world a favor by letting us see more of those preciously beautiful children!!

  13. 13
    Devonay says:

I LOVE the tutorials, however, I also like seeing the behind the scenes family stuff because it makes me feel like I know the blogger. I say keep doing things the way you're doing them… it's the reason we started following you in the first place. You're doing an awesome job!!

  14. 14
    Betsy says:

I think a sprinkle of family is 100% ok! I DO love your tutorials… I just made a 'yoga style skirt' for myself yesterday in fact! It was my first article of *real* sewn clothing since HS… other than that it was Ren Fair garb in college ;) But the family bits make you a real person instead of a can-do-anything-with-a-sewing-machine-internet-entity :) I like it.

    Teresa says:

I love the behind the scenes posts! Makes all my favorite bloggers seem more normal to me!
I love the dress or top your daughter has on one of the pics! So cute!

    Rachel Z. says:

I love seeing the family blogging too! I came upon your blog a few weeks before you had your baby and have been having fun reading and seeing pictures of her. I just had my second baby at the end of Oct. and she was 11 lbs. 11 oz.(you gotta love the big babies!) so I've been having fun reading all your posts about baby things, its also been inspiring me to sew some stuff for my 2 yr. old! Love it! I've been having fun reading all your tutorials and also trying some of them out. I made the pacifier clip yesterday and some of the satin flowers to make some hair pretties for my 2 yr. old daughter. She loves them!

I love all of it. I miss our little chats in your living room as we listen to our little ones giggle with excitement. I come here for the crafty posts but I really enjoy the family posts too. They are what make you a person and blog friend instead of just a site. I think you have a good balance sprinkling life in with the crafts.

It makes me happy to see that im not the only one with kids on my legs while im attempting my craftyness! I have not been blogging very long but my favorite blogs seem to be the ones with REAL people, so thank you for opening your inspiration and life up to stranger, who are toasting a smoothie in your honor ;) Besides without the kids and family you wouldnt be making stuff we get on here to copy ;) keep the silly pictures coming!

  23. 23

i love the family stuff! i feel a little more connected to blogs – not in a creepy way – when there is family stuff, so i'm more likely to check in :)

  24. 24
    Megan says:

I really should comment more considering I tend to look at all of your posts at least twice. I love seeing your family pictures, especially when it's your mom because I have floods of memories every single time. And your kiddos are just too cute to not like to read about, and I love the calmness and joy that your posts resound about motherhood. It gives me hope for being a mother of 2. Oh, and I love the crafty posts that have actually earned my sewing machine a place out where I may actually use it, and when I saw a bunch of white onesies on sale I snatched them up so that I could beautify them Ashley-style. I'll be sure to send pictures…which reminds me it is nap time and officially crafting time. Thanks for all of your posts! :) And I definitely need to take my son to the zoo. He LOVES any animal he sees, so the zoo would just amaze him. Maybe I should work on teaching him zoo animals.

well, it looks like everyone has already said this, but i like the mix of everything! i'm not quite a sewer like you yet, so your tutorials are fascinating, but i really like to see other things, too. keep it up!

    Lori Orr says:

I love seeing your family too! You are all so darn cute, and your writing is so fun! I think you do a great job balancing the two. I'm the kind of person that feels like I'm best friends with a person instantly, and now thanks to the blog world, I can feel that way about complete strangers! You can never have too many friends or care about too many people!

Personally I like seeing little family shots thrown in. I may not always read the whole post, (just like I'm sure not everyone reads my whole posts) but it doesnt mean I want them to end. It usually just means I have a two year old pulling on me. ;). I love your blog. Keep up the good work!

    Joel and Chelsey says:

Family events are fun to read about! It just makes me that much more amazed at how you do it. No chance I could ever do projects, blog and still be a good mom. I am just not that organized or crative. So keep it up! That way the rest of us and 'oooh' and 'ahhh' and your amazing things.

I love to see pictures of your family–especially since we don't live by eachother anymore :( I think your blog is the perfect balance between crafting & family, so keep up the good work!

Loved the pictures of the zoo–one of our favorite things to do! Your kids are absolutely adorable & growing up so fast! Hope Steve is enjoying school–Danny has 4 months left–can you believe it?!?

  38. 38
    The Browns says:

I like the family blogging. It makes me feel like I can be a mom AND be real good at sewing. :-) Sometimes your projects make me feel like you never do anything but sew. But then when you post about family and your kids, it makes me realize that you do other things. So in turn, I feel like if you can find the time to do all these amazing things with 3 kids, I can find the time to do some projects with one baby. :-) Make sense? I hope so. Plus your kids are super cute.

Jessica at Me Sew Crazy says:

Lol – you caught me. I am on here all. the. time.

I think blogging is a little bit of cyber space where you can create your own niche. And a huge part of that niche for us crafty bloggers is our family, many of us are SAHM's, and even for those who aren't – family should always comes to first. When we start to lose sight of that, when the crafting takes over, that's when I know it is time to take a step back.

People who read your blog enjoy knowing who you are as a person – and your family plays such a huge part of that. Without them, where would your support be? And furthermore, who would you have to craft for? Lol

    I love both sides.

  41. 41
    Cara says:

I like seeing your family life because it's nice to see it IS possible to juggle kids and crafting! But, I WILL admit that I usually notice your children's clothing etc. and wonder if you're planning a tutorial for various things. Such as the dress your adorable oldest daughter is wearing to the zoo :0)

  42. 42
    Dawn says:

I think you have just the right mix of both personal and crafts. I am truly amazed at your talents, especially your sewing skills! One of these days I am going to attempt one of your creations! Thanks for sharing! And I am so envious of your baby!! My oldest is 17, youngest is 11 and I am so needing a baby fix!! But not ready to be a grandma yet! lol… Enjoy the young ones… they grow too fast!

  43. 43
    Rachelle says:

I don't chime in often, but today I will say that I do like to know a little about the people I'm taking sewing lessons from! Ha. Ha. I like your pics!

  44. 44
    Dana says:

In general I prefer more sewing related posts. I blog to have some me time and not think about kids so I try not to post to much about my kids, but a little bit of family blogging makes you seem more human to others, and I like posts that emphathise with the stresses of parenthood and juggling crafts and kids as oppose to posts of just pics of kids. Its all about balance I guess but I think youve got that one just right.

  45. 45
    Li says:

I love seeing your family pictures, too. I rarely comment, but I read your blog religiously and love it!! I have to say, I'm super jealous of the summery outfits you all are sporting in these pics… and all the sunshine!! :)

  46. 46
    Stacie says:

I initially came for the sewing, since I am new at that and needed help. But I think the family posts are what remind us that a real person, not some perfect famous sewing diva (not that you aren't great!), is behind the blog. I say don't change a thing!

  47. 47
    famr_4evr says:

Keep sharing your family stuff! We love seeing ALL the fun things you are up to.

  48. 48
    Alisa says:

I have to say that if it was just tutorials everyday, I might be the one overwhelmed! I love that it ISN'T tutorials all of the time, but that it is a well rounded blog. That is why I have so many well rounded blogs that I follow in my reader. They each have something different to offer. And if each of them overwhelmed me with tutorials all of the time… well, I wouldn't have time for MY family. Thank you for sharing and doing what you do!

  49. 49
    Jennifer V. says:

As a mom who works outside the home and crafts/sews when the family can spare her or manage a sandwich for dinner, I appreciate that there are women like you who seem to be able to do it all. Your family posts remind me that you are real and that there is hope for the rest of us who sometimes feel like we can't manage our families and our hobbies.
And it is your blog….so post what you want. Bravo to you!

  50. 50
    Shanna says:

A love reading all of your posts, family or crafting!! The tutorials are great, but it's the real life of it all that is so appealing. It's real life that inspires so much of what we do, and it's nice to see the personal side :o)

  51. 51
    Amanda says:

I love every bit of your blog, family and crafts. Your brilliance is a part of my day I always look forward to :) I enjoy watching your children grow. The way you write feels like you are a friend. I love to sew and find myself thinkin, "of course" with a smack to my forehead. All awesome.

  52. 52
    Andrea says:

I think your blog is a good mixture of both, and that's why I keep coming back. Great job!

  53. 53
    Karis Brandes says:

I'm a long time reader (never a commenter though for some reason) and absolutely love your blog. Both the family stuff and the crafting stuff. Because, as any crafty person with a family knows, it's the family that inspires the crafty! I'd love if you keep sharing both!

p.s. your diaper bag was peeking through in the corner of one picture. Did you make it? I love it!

  54. 54
    Brooke Elyse says:

I found your blog when a few of my friends (from different places/different phases in my life) referred me to your blog for your tutorials. I love all of your posts- about crafts, about life, about your family. (ha, I kid)

    Kristi says:

I like the personal side of things mixed in every once in a while. With 6 kids of my own, it is nice to know my favorite bloggers have a real life too. And that maybe my kids actually are closer to normal than I sometimes think. :o)

The mix of everything is great! I especially love it on your blog because your little family is so similar to mine! (I have a 5 year old girl, 2 1/2 year old boy, and a 6 month old girl!)
I LOVED the pictures of your little guy contemplating over the flowers and sneaking the snacks! I have taken the same pictures of my little guy on more than one occasion! Love to see tidbits of your sweet little family sprinkled in!

    Breakfast With the Bennetts says:

Some of my favorite blogs are the ones with family and crafting mixed in. This is definately on the favorite blogs list for me. In fact when I lost my job last year and all of my saved favorites on my work computer (don't worry that is what I did during lunch not during work time) this is one of the only ones I remembered by name. The zoo pics are great!

    Hannah says:

I love your blog. I love everything about it. I love your crafts, I love looking at your beautiful family, I just love it. Actually, I was getting all kinds of excited right before your baby was born. I kept checking in a couple times a day looking for an update. So, keep it up, mama!

  67. 67
    Jessica :) says:

I think everything you do is fantastic. I love seeing your new projects and all the things you come up with. I also love seeing photos of your sweet family and hearing a bit of how everyone is doing or how you manage mom and blog or how the kids just love all the sweet things you make for them. I love every part of this blog. In my opinion, you shouldn't change a thing. :)

  68. 68
    Brandy says:

I love all of your crafts and your family pictures are so cute! I really want to know what kind of camera you have. All your photos look so great, at first I thought you staged your photos but even your zoo pictures are great. :)

  69. 69
    Monica says:

I'm new here, but I like the mix of both :). I'm too much of a hodge-podge person to only want one or the other. And that helps me to justify the mix of every thing in my own blog.

I love the zoo. I need to plan a trip to our zoo again soon.

  70. 70
Goings on at the Glenn's says:

So very fun! I love trips to the zoo. I laughed at the picture of your little boy deciding whether to listen to mommy or not. Sounds so much like my Ethan. I of course love the behind the scenes as well. Thanks for the shout out too! Made me smile.

    Ashlee says:

Ashley, I love your blog! I like when you sprinkle in a little about your family with your crafty/sewing tutorials! It is fun to get to know the author behind the blog. I always enjoy meeting new people and seeing what they are up to. It gives me an instant connection with them! Its like a pen pal that you have never met. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us as well as your family posts. Love it all. I am a huge fan of your site!

  74. 74
    Lindsey @ Inspiring Creations says:

I also have had the same issue! Do I share family pics or just keep my blog crafting only. I have decided that I like reading other blogs that combine both. I feel like it makes that person seem more real. So I would say keep both! I love reading your tutorials and about your family. :)

  75. 75
    Job and Rachael says:

I love to see family life with the crafts :) It is part of who you are and important to you which is something I look for when people blog :) I am loving both the crafts and the kids ;)

    end the fiasco! says:

You have a great mix of both!

My crafty to-do list is forever mounting so a break just to look at cute things (which your kiddos certainly are!) & not cute things TO DO is kind of nice!

    Jessica from says:

I had been wondering the same thing recently. I've been really careful to keep things separate on my craft etc vs my family blog, but sounds like it gives readers a better feel for who you are. I know I enjoy the family photos along with the great tutorials. I still wonder how you do it all. I need more nap times!!! HEHE Keep up the great work!

I love the family blogging mixed with the tutorials – it makes everything more personal, more human, ya know? Each of the craft blogs I follow are a great mixture of both, because I just love getting to know the person and the family on the other side of the computer screen!

Your zoo outing looks like so much fun – I'm jealous of the beautiful weather you are having, and jealous you got to feed those giraffes with their long tongues! How fun :)

I love all the posts…seriously. Your's is the only blog that I will read through all of the posts even when I am super backed up on my google reader. Your crafty blog posts are so cute! and your family blog posts are…well so cute! You're great!

I love your tutorials but I also like that you mix family in with crafting. Leaving out family would be like only presenting half of who you are and that would make your blog only half as fun!

I gotta say, I love everything you put on here. Your photos are great too!

What kind of camera do you use? Do you use any photo editing software?

P.S. It's YOUR blog so that means you can put whatever you want on here!

L.O.V.E. all the family posts in between the crafty posts! My favorite blogs all include a little bit of both! It makes it seem like we know each other a little bit better than just seeing new crafts each day :)

I love your blog. I love that you show your character (at least I'm assuming you are fun and free spirited!) and just post about what you love. Yes, I like the tutorials but it would get boring if it were just tutorials. So I say keep the blog how it is!

I love that you share your family and adventures with us!! You're so much more than a sew & craft guru…those pictures at the zoo were amazing! And it looked really warm – makes me miss the heat of Texas now that I live in northern Minnesota! : )

I definitely tune in for the family blogging because I can't sew at all. I even have a machine and have no interest in figuring it out!
